I think people overestimate the impact of formal education. Don't get me wrong, I think being educated is important, and learning in general is definitely essential, but it doesn't have to be in a formal setting. The thing is, the ability to learn (intelligence basically) is something that is more or less predetermined in individuals, and it's mostly based on genetics. One implication of this is that there are inherent limits on how advanced a civilization can get, and that limit is entirely set by biology.

So whatever happens to math and science education in America is irrelevant as far as the wellbeing of the nation is concerned. However, the fate of math and science in America will reflect the underlying important thing, which is the genetic changes in the population. And in terms of "useful brain power", that is certainly going to shit in America (and really all of the western world).
