In graduate school? Going through the painfully long application process?

I'm currently applying this cycle and don't know if I'm fucked for sitting pretty. Double major chem/phys with minor in math (gpa 3.86) with two years of research experience and an internship in petrochemical industry. Was originally gonna post this to /adv/ but it seems more appropriate here since I wanna start a general conversation about pursuing doctoral study after undergrad.

Is the GRE really a meme and only serves a filter? Is it a based or cuck move to email groups that you are interested in joining prior to application? Are the biggest factors letters of recommendation and research experience??

I feel like I'm in high school again trying to figure all this shit out, anyone have any tips on applying for PhD in the natural sciences?

Question for real scientists only:

What ideas that you’ve come across are closest to the source code of existence?

>This mythological archetypal impulse behind the true investigating urge of scientists still survives in the great scientists of today. The ultimate dynamic impulse to become a physicist is based upon the desire to ?nd out more about how God works. When, during a discussion with Niels Bohr, Einstein suddenly with affect exclaimed, “God does not play dice,” he gave himself away. Similarly, after hearing that the principle of parity was no longer completely valid but had been broken, Pauli’s ?rst words were, “Then God is left-handed after all.” That amounted to the same thing! So you see, scientists are still true alchemists, in a modern version, and their interest in investigating the mystery of matter is still not carried only by material impulses, or opportunism, or academic ambition, as it is with minor minds. The really great and creative scientists have the same motivation as the alchemists: to ?nd out more about that spirit or divine substance or whatever you may call it, which lies behind all existence.

Worried about the safety of the "vaccines"? Stop! The CDC released a public statement that says they're "working as fast as possible" to get them fully approved.
I for one am really reassured that they're rushing things and that they've already decided the end result before the final data is in.

Scientifically speaking, why couldn't we just rub neosporin on the insides of our lungs to heal the damage caused by covid? Why are scientists actively suppressing such a simple and effective treatment?

Chemist Karens;

Anon has been tasked with recommissioning an acid waste disposal system, and truth be told, anon has no chemistry background whatsoever. We've moved into the premises fairly recently and this system is left over from the previous tenants, complete with some of their acidic waste still in it.

System takes waste acidic water from a sump, pumps it into tank 1 (rh), measures the ph, doses something into the tank to neutralise the acid, and mixes it.

After the mix is given time to settle it's pumped into tank 2 (top centre) for another settling. Then drained from middle of tank into tank 3 (lh) for a final settling and ph check.

Then drained into normal sewer from middle of tank 3.

We're not actually putting anything acidic into the sump, only fresh water now, but enough acidic silt is in the system that we can't just discharge it. Our budget certainly doesn't stretch to having the system professionally cleaned out, or hiring an actual chemist. So we plan to try and recommission it and just neutralise the acid every time we need to drain the sump which will probably be about once per month.

PH measures about 3.5~4 in tank 1.

The question is, what would you dose into it to neutralise it?
A "keep your workplace tidy" poster left from the previous tenants shows that they dosed a liquid from a large blue barrel into tank 1 to neutralise it, but can't make out the label on it. Any ideas what chemical they'd be likely to use?
