Fair, I was going to recommend applied math/finance if he went the math route. Wouldn't a mechanical engineer be able to take a path towards building similar things as an aerospace engineer but with more solid job prospects in general? Speaking from a point of ignorance here.

Aerospace and mechanical engineering undergrad degrees typically vary by a few elective choices.

Anyway, even if yo "like high school math" you have no idea what theoretical math is about. Engineering of any kind, all around is a safe bet with plenty of "math" he likes.
