Graph problem

No.14227822 ViewReplyOriginalReport
Let's see how good /sci/ is with graphs. This is an original problem, so I doubt you'll be able to find the answer online. Will post the answer in 8-ish hours if no one has solve it by then.

You are given the complement of a nearly-complete unweighted undirected simple graph with $$N$$ nodes. By nearly-complete we mean that the graph has $$ N(N-1)/2 - M $$ edges, where $$M <= N^1.5$$. So you are given those $$M$$ missing edges, as well $$Q<=N^1.5$$ queries. Each query is a pair of nodes and you have to find the length of the shortest path between them (or say there is no path).

What is the best solution you can come up with, in terms of time (and memory) complexity?

Non-Meme Time Travel

No.14234051 ViewReplyOriginalReport
OK, so break this down for me, /sci/, as far as I understand it, the concept of time travel as espoused by sci-fi is a non-starter. The only possible way to do it in theory is through time dilation, which only happens at speeds approaching the speed of light, and only specific particles can do this, not living entities. Furthermore, the concept of particles that travel at or beyond the speed of light (luxons and tachyons as opposed to bradyons), are only theoretical particles, and have yet been documented (as for luxons, I suppose it could be argued that the gauge bosons qualify, but this is rather beside the point). Is that it anons? Is the dream of human time travel well and truly a meme?

Pic related is probably the most ancient alien civilization known to the universe. There's no question that this is an alien civilization harvesting stars. A void complete devoid of stars and black holes like this could never exist naturally in our universe. They're probably one hundred times larger than what we see them as from our telescopes. In one hundred thousand years we'll see even more stars completely vanish around the void.

i have a very crude undertanding of genetics.

say for example you have a fault on your face which is quite prominent, would a strategy of finding a woman with the inverse of that feature give your potential offspring a better chance of not inheriting the fault you have?

Hi /sci/, anyone here awake or waking up?

You mentioned taking magic mushrooms, for example, as comparison to my schizophrenia... I should mention that having a being telepathically communicating with you is not like any drug, at all. But it's not as strange as you might think, it could happen and you wouldn't be very freaked out by it, because you realise:
1) we communicate all the time, with physical plane people, but our communication (eg in poetry and art) is not necessarily simple at all
2) the nature of the entire mind is telepathic, and you've been telepathically communicating the whole time, but you possibly didn't formally recognise it
... later 3) when you read about mystics and religious saints and psychic mediums you realise humans have been doing this for thousands of years
I once told a psychiatrist who was telling me about the mechanism of action of an anti-psychotic (a serotonin agonist) that I had taken a serotonin stimulant (ecstasy) and that the effects of it were nothing like my symptoms. He seemed somewhat perturbed.
