I'm a beginner nuclear physics. I wanted to know if you can really make a somewhat effective neutron gun from americium, radium and aluminum foil. It seems to me that the particles would also have to be accelerated before hitting the foil somehow but idk if this is true.

What do you mean neutron gun?
You can get a LOT of neutrons from AmBe, PuBe, etc. sources but the spectrum will be a fission spectrum.
You can get quasi monoenergetic but low energy (< 100 keV) using Li mixed with Boron (and an accelerator voltage).
You can get monoenergetic using DD or DT fusion reactions but you would need an accelerator. A proton telescope could work if you fix the observation angle but you'd need an accelerating potential again and the efficiency would be ass.

Get a certain mass of Pu-239 shaped into a hollow sphere surrounded by carefully arranged explosives and waveshaper. With the right geometry two detonators is sufficient. Place this thing we'll call a primary at one end of a thing we'll call a radiation channel made of high-Z thin foils. At the other end place a cylindrical rod of U-235 surrounded by Li-D contained by a thing made of high-Z material we'll call the pusher. We'll call this the secondary.

Kek. If I wanted to make a nuke the best I could do is a u235 block dropper onto another u235 block and if i were generous i would also add rdx as an accelerator. This process would however require you to have certain mods installed, minecraft doesn't have such things in the vanilla game

I'm in the third year of my degree, majoring in Math and Physics and minoring in CS. I have a 3.7 currently and am probably going to get a 3.9+ on the year, but I have no idea of the fundamental underpinnings of any of the disciplines I've studied, especially Math. I'm pretty good at programming, but I feel like I'm doomed to be a midwit mediocrity.

Hit 31 and accepted that I am an NPC. Dropped out of college in my early 20's because I couldn't even handle getting a graphic design degree. A conic in n dimensions is the zero set of a degree 2 polynomial. For example xy-1=0 in 2 dimensions has a hyperbola, a kind of conic. All conics can be realized as the intersection of a plane with a cone in one higher dimension, hence the name.
A union of conics is the zero set of the product of many degree 2 polynomials, in 3 dimensions for example you could have
(x^2+y^2-1)(x^2-y)(x^2+y^2-z^2)=0, the union of 3 conics: a circular cylinder, a parabolic cylinder, and a cone. A product as such is literally the set theoretical union of conics.
