Also, you should probably note that cobalt 60 is a particularly nasty isotope, it's pretty much the standard of what people are looking for when they're trying to minimize contamination associated with nuclear work/maintenance.

It'll fuck up your lungs/GI tract if inhaled or ingested, and will just sit around continuing to dose you for years (in the form of entrained dust in your clothes/pockets/shoes/etc) if not properly decontaminated.

Yeah that's exactly why I was asking. I'm trying to write an essay on a UFO incident that took place at a nickel mine in 1950s Ontario. They traumatized a miner there by asking him to do something but he refused to say what it was. US Air Force investigators for Project Blue Book suggested that the aliens in this particular case where here to turn the entire nickel mine into Cobalt-60, which would irradiate the entire planet. I wanted to know if this was possible at all. The story is very interesting, here's another great writeup if you're interested- wanted to expand on the story by linking it to what I know about cobalt bombs.

That's absolute bullshit. Cobalt-60 decay results in ionizing radiation that would be absorbed by surrounding rock and effectively harmless in a quarry format as long as people avoided getting near it. It'd just end up being a large clump of relatively warm cobalt warming the other shit around it for about 30 years till it half-life decayed itself into a less shitty state.

You might have to worry about it irradiating nearby shit in the dirt... but for the most part, if you were aware about where and what it is... it's harmless.

Maybe, my guess was (assuming this story is true & the Air Force was right) they would've turned the underground ore into cobalt-60 and then somehow released it into the atmosphere, possibly with a surface -level nuclear blast.

Possible? Yes. But usually nickel-60 is an end product of cobalt-60 production. It's simpler to produce cobalt-60 from cobalt-59 or iron-58 plus any neutron source; they absorb neutrons very easily. Plus if you just buy bulk cobalt, it's all going to be cobalt-59 and you don't have to think.
