What you expected vs What you got

Let's clear up some "grass is greener" misconceptions, I keep peering over the fence to see what the rest of STEM is doing

What I expected in chemistry:

>cool problems to solve by trying out weird reactions
>characterize your compound and spit a paper out
>lots of collaboration with fellow chemists

What I got in chemistry:

>professor says the paper you got your reaction from is unfallible and you are wrong
>nothing ever fucking works
>hot and sweaty lab attire
>lots of drinking and drugs with fellow chemists

Medical anons I need your advice.

My appendix ruptured but I wasn't seen by the hospital until 7 days later by which time it had been walled off by the omentum and developed an abscess. I had two CT scans last month, the type where they inject you with radioactive liquid and then the machine spins and blasts you with x-rays.

I recovered with only antibiotics and my appendix has not been removed. I have no symptoms or pain anymore. But the hospital want me to undergo another CT scan next month and then have the appendix removed. I'm worried about radiation and cancer. I've already had two CT scans, I really don't want a third. And as for removing the appendix, I'd rather not undergo surgery when I feel fine now.

Is this the wrong decision? Am I a fool for declining further treatment?

From a game theoretical perspective, is it possible that two countries with nuclear weapons go to war while agreeing to not use nukes against each other? Similar to how countries agreed to not use gas in WW2, no matter how bad things got.

Would it be feasible to create “scuba” equipment that administers oxygen and nitrogen to the blood stream via continuous intravenous injection? How much of these gasses are “lost” during regular respiratory inhalation? Would this theoretically be more efficient in terms of dive time to “air” supply?

Increasing IQ after having poor education

I grew up in Scotland, a small town of junkies in Lanarkshire. The school I went to looked like an abandoned hospital and most of my family were recovering from drug addiction and had severe mental problems. I've inherited negative traits from my mother's side, my grandmother in particular, and some from my father's side too who I believe is known to have some form of learning deficiency running in the family. I dropped out since there wasn't much going for me and I haven't done much since, I work as a cashier. I feel like shit for being so ignorant towards how the world works but I feel as if there isn't much I can do. The world to me is just this confusing mess of random events with no meaning behind them. I can't even do my times tables. I feel a sense of dread and worthlessness all the time, like there is no point to it all. I know you all are smart so I was hoping that you could help me. Is there any real purpose to it all? Is it bad to be stupid? What can I do to improve?
