you literally multiply your signal step by step with a pure sinusoidal in certain frequency and if the summation adds up it means your signal contains the frequency, if it cancels out (because sine oscillate -1 to 1) that means no such frequency in the signal.

do you really understand why ft used for at all? I see the complex form is better for calculation, but I would not use it to give intuition.

From a historical standpoint, it was pretty useful for heat equations. Then, it was a pretty useful tool to solve the Maxwell equations in early days of long distance communications and radio. The Signal processing and control applications are pretty late comers, but hell if it's useful
