Steering the ship

No.14133686 ViewReplyOriginalReport
Let's say that we have a smooth () vector filed (constant with resprect to time)
,
where .

We also have a "ship" that is always moving
(sailing over this vector field in )
at a constant relative speed .
This ship can only do "smooth" turns.

(In general) How hard of a problem it is to find an optimal "steering"
(a function , which maps time to a direction)
of the ship from coordiante to coordiante
— optimal steering gives the quickest route.

Note. The solution is not necessarily unique.
The solution in the figure can be a little bit misleading.

>friend taking analysis class
>teacher is making him use LaTeX on homework
>he's never used LaTeX
>gives them pre-fabbed document to fill in their answers
>look at document
>has about 50 \usepackages and half a page of macro definitions
>uses said macros throughout the document
>even I'm fucking confused by this shit
>friend getting frustrated
>tell him to just make a blank doc and do it from scratch
>refuses because he thinks he'll lose points
I'm honestly pissed at that instructor, she wants them to learn LaTeX but she's made it so bastardized and convoluted that they're not able to learn anything. I would understand if the students were expected to know it to begin with, but throwing that shit at a bunch of noobs is fucking retarded.

is it possible that i can feel the rotation of the earth?

No.14132917 ViewReplyOriginalReport
right after sunset yesterday, in new york, i felt the tiniest bit lighter. i did some quick googling and apparently weight can fluctuate around half a pound for a 150 pound person, depending on elevation and distance from equator. i know it seems like a retarded question, but could it be that i was literally feeling the earth in its rotation around the sun, as it speeds up after the solstice and tries to fling me off the surface, very slightly?
