sin(Theta) is a function of theta.
theta is angle between two lines of a triangle.
The third line just connects the two lines.
the value of that function is equal to the ratio of two sides of that triangle.
How did they discover these things?
Well first they measured all values and then a set of patterns and rules were conceived.
Why are these rules important?
triangle geometry and phenomenon behaving like these rules are common in physical reality.

Rotation mostly. Space in games is defined by vectors using X and Y units. The trig functions show how the amount of X and Y used (the lengths) change based on the angle between. If you look at a unit circle this is more obvious.

Space and measurement is arbitrary. So if your new unit is different, your measurements change. With the original units it may be 3 of one axis and 4 of the other. But now its -5 of the first and -6 of the second. Etc

Even if the trig functions were arbitrary the wave pattern is also nice when you want to vary something periodically like light level

I live in western North America. I checked my browser history and I remember what I was doing at the approximate time of the explosion. Is it possible I heard it? Because I distinctly remember it sounding like someone opened the front door to my house that night. Am I going nuts? Did anyone else here explosions, or notice things that could be explained by shockwaves that night? Apparently, booming noises were heard in the Yukon.

Ya, I would not have felt it, but I read one article that people in the Yukon heard booming noises saturday morning. I guess it happened across the int'l date line so it would have been saturday morning for people in Yukon (?). Anyway, it would have taken about 10 hours for the soundwaves to travel to North America.

Does anyone know WHEN this thing happened? Like what specific time of day in a North AMerican time zone?

Presumably the shock wave would have dissipated considerably by that point, but I wonder if constructive interference at the antipode would be enough to make it quite loud

These don't produce any pretty pictures though. Only prints out a simple rendering with basic ascii art. You'd need to use some sort of image library and some more code to spit out something that's nice to look at. I actually suspect the rendering step would require more code than the main algorithm.

It also depends entirely on what programming language you're using. In my experience, Python and Processing are both languages with a relatively approachable process for rendering and saving images. In Processing it's possible natively, whereas with Python it requires PIL, the Python Image Library. Also if you go the Python route, you should know that modern PIL development happens via a fork project called Pillow. If your Python version is above a certain threshold, you have to specifically use Pillow as the (old) PIL distributions aren't common with modern Python 3.
When I say "relatively approachable" I don't mean that it's easy for any given person. But if you understand how to slap together other peoples' code in a basic language like Python, then you'll find every line you need pre-written on StackExchange.

The Processing feels like a dumb language because there's so much stuff natively in it. I think it's not even counted as a legitimate programming language by professional coders. For example, you need like 10 characters of code to generate an ellipse or something. It's too easy. Programming something that way is ridiculous because if you then tried to move to some other language like C or C++, making that same ellipse or whatever in that other language would now suddenly require 9001 hours more study and knowledge compared to the dumb Processing language.
