I would imagine much of the anger over tranny shit is a manifestation of how society and the economy is getting worse for most people. Government doesn't seem to solve problems anymore and has largely been captured by corporations and various entrenched interests. Deindustrialization has ruined many cities, home ownership is increasingly unrealistic for young people, wages have been stagnant for decades, inflation is now seriously eroding purchasing power. If people felt like they were advancing, secure, and could fulfill their power process then I doubt we'd see this level of anger.

Though more to the original point, I think it's because the elite see wokeism as America's new civic religion. Tolerance of different identities has become the primary virtue, since the US is a multicultural empire that has historically expanded much of its population through immigration. Identity politics is also a good way to keep the population divided along increasingly arbitrary lines, which prevents them from organizing to implement reforms that threaten elite interests.

Right now it's marketing, but at the end of the day it's about monetization.
All the ways you interact with it will have hooks for either direct consumer payments, payment by advertiser, or payment for anonymized user data.

Yeah, except one was a relatively small niche project during a time the internet was still somewhat unavailable to most people, while the other is backed by big tech companies and comes at a time when even kids down to 5 are wholly integrated with the internet and people spend more time online than they do in real life

Technologcally, humanity was a "long" way from it coming true back then, but psychologically, normies are pretty much there, and those who were noticing it even back then were quite insightful and forward-thinking. Normies won't even have to trade their boring real life for a fake exciting life. Nothing about modern life is remotely real, anyway. They'll simply be upgrading to a more exciting fake.
