I fell for the PhD meme

No.13411835 ViewReplyOriginalReport
>me and my gf graduate from the same uni (pure maths degree)
>I'm considered one of the smartest kids in my class, convinced I have a passion for research, go straight for a PhD (top 25 uni worldwide)
>she goes for a banking career

>Today
>Me: 0 motivation for research, everything is so dull and boring, it takes ages just to improve a small detail of a result that nobody even cares about, haven't even published a single paper yet
>My girlfriend: has dream job in banking, makes literally 5 times my salary (100k euros per year)

What the fuck went wrong? Don't fall for the PhD meme kids.

how do I scientifically improve my memory? I don't dream at night, I have forgotten most of my childhood, I have forgotten most of what I learned in school, and I have difficulty remembering my own mother's face. I also can't recall things during conversation.

I have a few theories about what caused this.
1. I used to sleep with my blanket over my head because it was cold at night. Decreased oxygen intake might have led to brain damage (even though everyone illogically pretends that sleeping with blanket over head is okay to do)

2. trampoline usage when I was a child. I used to jump around for hours and the action might have led to multiple micro concussions

3. undiagnosed adhd

what scientifically can be done about this?

I'm curious what some smarter folk think here about something I've been thinking about. What is the meaning of life?
To be more specific I mean are their any goals that can be shown to be logically necessary or intrinsically valuable?
Like if you had an artificial intelligence without any goals or values and turned it on what would it do? Would it do anything? Lets say it had the goal of finding a goal. Would it be able to?

You are very likely just a walking, talking, crapping, sack of meat and bones that descended from primates over a period of millions of years or at the very least, a bunch of pack-hunting cavemen. You and your race are not special. You very likely do not come from 'divine beings'. There is no proof of 'magic'. No proof of a 'soul'. No proof of anything. Just what you see around you in an absurd mess. I'm sick of you ass-clowns on here shouting, "the end is nigh", "repent", or "magic is real, guyz". True scientists are empiricists and will not be intimated by your empty threats of 'spiritual retribution'. There is no proof of magic people or gods coming to save you. This is your one chance at anything ever. Your 'traditions' are a sad lie. Once useful in creating group cohesion, but have served their purpose. If you people could only accept all of this and stop believing nonsense, you would stop:

- Making children retarded by believing nonsense and dependent on 'praying' and instead make them self-sufficient in a cold, cruel universe. Their life would be all the more well-lived.

- Holding back scientific progress by scaring children who would be scientists with threats of hell and using politics to de-fund research. (Btw, you might slow us down, but we'll keep moving forward)

Cont.

Was in an abandoned coal mine. This weird white/clear crystal has grown on almost all the exposed coal. What is it?
