Where do you draw the line as to where statistics becomes calculus? The more I learn stats the more I feel like its just calc applied to a very specific need (yes i know this is what calc literally is fuck off) its just where do you draw the line?

Almost all science fiction pictures highly advanced alien species as hyper-rationalized and often completely deprived of any suboptimal behaviour like passion, hate or personal preferences, or even survival instinct. Be it all devouring harvesters, post singularity hiveminds or 5-dimensional space farts.
I am wondering, how inevitable it is to give up the imperfect attributes, that define a species.
