What? The only proprietary software is to turn fluorescence intensities into base pairs and remove adaptor/primer/index sequences right? The actual FASTQ files that come out of Ilumina's proprietary software are just a big bucket of reads- reads which you can align and map using whatever you want. You can use proprietary stuff if you want, but there are like 10 different popular open source alignment packages available to use.

Girls get into Marine Biology in huge numbers. The US probably graduates 20x or more the number of marine biologist than there are jobs for. Most end up as school teachers. I suspect they go for Marine Biology because it's at the intersection of "caring" for animals and being seen as a STEM degree but far easier than getting a veterinary degree.
If you have a passion for marine biology, as long as you're realistic about the job prospects and that the field is oversupplied with labor, go for it. You will never have more than a middle class lifestyle (at best) but if you love the work, that's worth a lot.
