Prerequisite rabbitholes

No.13675907 ViewReplyOriginalReport
Hi folks, I'm in a strange predicament. I have a CS background.

I originally set out to learn some computational fluid dynamics because I thought it would be cool to do visualization stuff with that. Anyway I looked at some resources and realized I need to learn about PDEs/fluid mechanics, so I studied calc/differential equations which became a distant memory from highschool (was extremely time consuming). Then I went looking for courses/books on fluid mechanics but realized I need to brush up on my basic physics and so on and so forth. I just keep going back and back in this endless prerequisite procrastination. I don't know what to do, on one hand I could just go ahead and read material on CFD but that would be pointless because I wouldn't understand it but on the other hand I really want to understand deeply - it's recursive too because I don't just brush up on the past stuff I feel insecure and want to understand them deeply too before moving to the next level.

Does anyone else experience this? Can you offer me some advice on how to deal with this weird insecurity procrastination?

Too uncertain to make use of decision theory...

No.13676284 ViewReplyOriginalReport
Total stab in the dark here but while Decision Theory is great if you need to weigh up the utility of finite given options, but what do you do if you have no options or if all the presented options are more costly than doing nothing at all?
Stuff like choosing a career, choosing where to live, or what about trying to create a new competitive advantage in a business?
I guess that comes under the domain of 'problem solving'. Does solving those problems come under decision theory? If not is there another /sci/ discipline that helps?

Well, /sci/, are you smarter than the average American adult?

>In 2003, over 19,000 adults participated in the national and state-level assessments, representing the entire population of U.S. adults who are age 16 and older, most in their homes and some in prisons from the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Approximately 1,200 inmates of federal and state prisons were assessed in order to provide separate estimates of literacy for the incarcerated population.

Can someone explain to me why humans lose so much stamina as they age? We seem to retain strength pretty well, but even at 29 athletes start to fall off in many sports because they can't keep up anymore. What system in our bodies breaks down so fast?

What is this graphic supposed to represent? If it's speaking of pure imagination, then shouldn't everyone be able to visualize anything between the first 2 on the left?

What can you see if you try to recreate an image of an apple in your mind?
