If you are an engineering undergrad it doesn’t really matter, just learn row reduction.

If you’re interested in pure math I’d say to not read one at all. Read an abstract algebra book which covers that material anyway. If you insist on reading one, then Hoffman & Kunze is best. Don’t only read the first several chapters which are mostly applied stuff. Don’t skip difficult proofs. At least learn how the determinant is constructed through exterior products and its uniqueness. I’d say to do the chapter on polynomial rings too. In my view the standard abstract algebra treatment is a great intro to pure math since group theory is the best way to learn how to prove things and will build your algebraic intuition.

Hello there /sci/, I am currently seeking out to get my PhD in computer science. And to be able to afford getting it (currently $60K in debt) I need to seek out a scholarship; specifically one from the National Science Foundation. For that, I need to detail a field of interest I need (e.g., what project do you plan on working on for your PhD?).

So I’m coming to you guys today to ask if you guys got any ideas in regards to computer science PhD projects, specifically involving robotics / machine learning. Give me whatever ideas you have, and if I do pick one I will post the resulting research here; and maybe whatever works in progress I have for it.

Anon has a point. You don't get a PhD in ANY field unless you know what the fuck you want to research. In computer science, "I want to research idunno, robotics or AI or something?" shows you don't know what you want to do, and you're probably gonna be miserable. Oddly specific projects you have no passion for won't provide the motivation you need, and "golly, I love making connections and getting better at 'research'" won't last long either.

Just fucking wait until next year after you've thought about it some more. Get a job in the meantime and pay off some of your debts. If you're qualified to enter a PhD program (in compsci, no less), that should be doable for you.

Like why is the field only shown at the bottom? Space doesn't have such qualifications, there's no top or bottom. The all around gravitational field around the sun should be shown as such.

These sort of "scientific" illustrations do more harm than good, it genuinely hampers understanding of concepts and sets us back

I wasn't being completely serious but OP was asking for an illustration of the gravitational field, by which I assumed they meant the metric tensor, which is a section of $S^2 M$ , a rank ten vector bundle over spacetime.

Why wouldn't it be? That's 2 grams. Fruit bodies sold for culinary use are typically grown to around 100 grams. I don't think it's harmed anyone. It would probably be cheaper and better to buy it for food. You're probably getting the mycelium from the spent substrate.

It's called Planck frequency which itself is derived from Planck length and speed of light and comes down to 1.8549×10^43 / s, which would probably be the closest approximation of the frame rate of the universe. Of course you could increase the frame rate even beyond that, you would just end up with duplicate images. That being said if time and movement are actually continuous then frame rate would also scale up to infinity with higher rate yielding more data.

As off last year the record for a camera is at least 70 trillion frames per second (or 8x10^13 / s) by the Caltech CUSP
