Imagine something like this contraption but instead of the winding path the ball takes from the top to the bottom it just drops onto a pad below. As the ball falls and hits the pad the energy has turned from gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy. The kinetic energy can then be used to power the mechanism causing the wheel to rotate and thus the ball once again can be caught by the magnet and brought back up to the top.
