How does one "destroy" a technology?

Do you track down all the machinery components and melt them down in an Industrial Oven? Collect the blueprints and burn them, magnetize all hardrives and wipe the Internet? Line up all the engineers against a wall and shoot them?

If you melted a gold bar, compressed it to a much smaller size, then let it cool without letting it expand? What would happen?
