Is this true /sci/?

No.14201817 ViewReplyOriginalReport
>Every cog-sci and every linguist in the world understands AI is impossible. Every engineer understands extended space travel is impossible. Every biologist understands living on an alien planet is impossible, especially if gravity is a different value from Earth's. Our skeletal and circulatory systems specifically evolved to counteract the effects of precisely g, and when that value changes, we break down and die almost immediately. It is very likely nobody could survive for even 2 years on Mars, a planet of 38%g, before they succomb to blindness, severe osteoperosis, or stroke due to blood clotting. Births are out of the question. We've known this at least since the Mariner 6 flyby, but really a few decades earlier. The famous Strugatsky brothers (Soviet SF writers) guessed it in 1957 almost a decade earlier. Ironically SF was predictive for once - in what science could not accomplish. They did what every SF writer who does enough research does: change to soft-SF and focus on politics. Same thing happened to Verne and Wells when technology caught up to their imaginations and stopped them dead.

Q: What caused the Big Bang?

A: nothing. Nothing caused the Big Bang. Everything in the universe is based on cause and effect, but cause and effect do not apply outside of the universe.

On Depression.

No.14196622 ViewReplyOriginalReport
Do most of the people who say they are depressed, are actually depressed? Or perhaps they are just lazy, or very sad. Considering some advice people give, it seems as if they have no understanding of dperesion. When you don't have motivation to do anything, and you are fighting against a biological state, you won't win. "Go to the gym, eat better, get sun". There is no pleasure in any of it, let alone motivation to go do so.

Depression isn't just being sad. Depression is a depressed state of the brain. Everything is just running on a "lower" state. Hence the loss of motivation, weight gain/loss, and loss of pleasure.

1-2 years ago, I have become "depressed". From nothing. It was out of nowhere. I don't understand why or what happened really, but it just did. It truly does feel as if the chemicals running my brain just went haywire. Just now am I seeing a doctor to do something. If it's a neutrotransmitter imbalance, shouldn't medication work? Like, balance out the serotonin /dopamine, then get off the medication. How would /sci/ cure depression, not "being sad im depressed", but the actual depressed state of mind?

I’m not even sure if I’m doing things right in my PDE course and yet I’m still getting good-high marks and feel that every time I watch a PDE be solved it’s different. My prof. tells us that he wants us to learn and might not truly be grading us at all. What am I supposed to get out this?

As it concerns staying mentally healthy, does the human brain care whether it receives love and affection coming from a real person, or imagined love and affection coming from a fictional character? I mean, evolutionarily-speaking, it seems like it'd be inefficient to bother developing some way to discern between the two, similar to how the brain doesn't care whether you're masturbating or having sex and produces an orgasm either way.

Asking for my wife BTW.

Why does water stop coming out?

No.14203442 ViewReplyOriginalReport
I put the straw into the water with my finger on top.
I remove my finger, the air is pushed out from the water pressure and the air and the water shoots out on top. But then it stops.
The pressure below is still the same which is what did this i presume. So why does it stop?

Also interested in how to calculate how high it will shoot based on depth i push it in...
