Anyway, I don't think that the dimorphism would only work for spacefaring civilizations, and you raise some good ideas for it. The males can just primarily raise the male babies and the females the female, while both helping the other in the clutch and such it would work out.

The basal metabolic rate doesn't increase linearly with a linear increase in mass it grows at a rate of about M^(3/4). So you don't save half as much food with a person that's half as massive.
