Steel is made by combining iron with carbon. But could you make other types of materials by combining iron with other elements? What if you combined iron with sulfur to make "sulfur steel" or whatever that would be called.

Why or why not would that be possible? Could iron be combined with other elements which are something other than carbon but also non-metallic?

Yes, Vanadium is used extensively to make stronger carbon lattices. It's probably the most famous example because of le damascus steel.

grading the basic exercises students should be trying anyway is an administration decision, if the questions are known by students it is busywork and should not form part of the grade, if the problems are tricks/new material then the course grades do not reflect students learning

Yeah that makes sense. My school does not offer a graduate math program, its a small school like I said.
I haven't seen any tricks on any material. Initially I was shocked at test content, but after talking to people its the standard that test are filled with large problems which fuse learning objectives and require thinking about the problem rather than plugging in a proof you learned or computing an integral.

Graded or not, assignments every week are very useful, especially if the professor can look and comment on your work. I supplement with additional texts as well, which should be recommended to all students, I think. On that, I'm a bit peeved that the answer book for spivak doesn't include answers to all problems, not like it would have added that many more pages....

I'm not sure what else I would use office hours for besides discussing the learning objectives and problems related to the course. Maybe with covid out of the way and in person classes going all in again, I will find something. I understand those relationships are useful for graduate school applications.
