I read that the reason we count in 10s is because we have 10 fingers. But if we had 8 fingers, wouldn't that be our "ten"?
Like, we would go 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 10?
And we would say "One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Ten".
So in actual fact all that would happren if we had 8 fingers is that we would lose the digits 8 and 8 and the names Eight and Nine?

What ARE the uses for this? He brought up solving global warming and being on par with the discovery of transistors, but also said it could be nothing.

Hello /sci/
My main interest in life is philosophy, literature, art, history etc. and I've always refused to give any time to mathematics because I hated it at school, barely passing and being unable to grasp it in any meaningful way. However, I've begun to develop an interest in the philosophical and theological implications of mathematics, particularly after reading Ramanujan's thoughts on equations and their expression of God. I would like to attempt some self-education in mathematics in the same way I did with philosophy (wasn't taught it at school at all).
Question is: Where do I begin? What books do I read? How different are mathematical concepts from philosophical ones? Can you recommend any books/info on the relationship between mathematics and religion?

What happens in the brain that causes one to be as smart as the likes of John Von Neumann? How can such an extremely useful level of ability be relegated to such a few people?

how do we have different strains of seedless bananas, or for that matter different strains of seedless fruit in general? Did each of these varieties come from it's own individual seeded ancestor, or is there some way to change the genes of seedless fruit?
