I've started studying chemistry on my own after a pretty underwhelming class at uni. Practically speaking, is there some reaction that can produce something that is useful in every-day life or would I just be doing reactions for the sake of learning and just stockpile reagents and products to no avail?

>doctor diagnoses me with inflammatory bowel disease
>says diet has no impact on the onset or remission of disease
>feel fine for almost a decade on low dose medication
>tells me to take chemo medication
>hair falls out, doctor says drugs are not to blame
>doctor keeps fear mongering me that my inflammation is high despite me feeling completely fine the whole time
>wants me to take even more drugs so that I may not need surgery in the future
why are doctors like this?
