God I wish I were a plant
they are allowed, even more, expected to be endless neets that literally just consooom and grow. Their food comes to them with air and rain, they don't have to worry about whether or not they will have income to put food on the table.
how can mam*als even compete?

Your Most Autistic /sci/ Ideas

No.13650307 ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
What's the most autistic idea you've had for an engineering megaproject?

Considering how hard California is about to be fucked by the looming water shortage and subsequent desertification crisis, I've had the novel idea to build a massive nuclear desalinization plant near the sea that doubles as a pumping station which will create a huge new artificial lake in the area that is now Death Valley national park. Pic related, it would essentially be recreating an ancient lake that previously existed in that area.

The power plant would be a conventional boil-off type but on a scale never attempted, with a target output of almost 1 terawatt. The primary function of the powerplant would be desalinize seawater in enormous quantity and then pump the distilled water to Death Valley until the basin fills up creating a new lake which would be almost 600 feet deep have a shoreline 300 feet above sea level. Because the pipe network wold be well over 100 miles long and cross several mountain ranges, the water itself would be pumped as steam to a condensing center located at the area that would later become the new lake's west shore.

The new "Lake Sierra" would become the primary water source of both Los Angeles to the west and Las Vegas to the east, and the shore of the lake would become a highly sought-after site for community development. I would also massively cool the area and slow desertification by aborning the massive amounts of heat with evaporation.

As an added bonus: I'd build a new high-tech city "New Venice" on the north face of Lake Sierra located to the northwest of Tucki mountain. I chose that name because a large portion of the city would be located on huge artificial archipelagos, similar to the ones built in Dubai.

Post your craziest ideas. Don't be shy.

Mosquito Genocide

Is there any reason not to eradicate them? They do nothing but kill people, spread disease, and do not contribute much to the ecosystem.

air flow through a pipe calculation

No.13655062 ViewReplyOriginalReport
hello /sci/, /diy/ here.
I have a what I suspect is a simple problem I just don't know how to do.

I'm shopping for a new dedicated air compressor for an air assist line, and I'm just trying to figure out how much CFM I need for the single task, because I want to get the compressor as small as possible (so it's quieter)

the only thing I need it to do is let air flow through a 3/16" ID hose at 20-25 PSI
I need that airflow to be maintained without interruption, I don't care if the compressor runs nonstop to accomplish that.

TLDR what is the CFM of an 3/16" hose with one end open, and the other end being supplied 25 PSI, what about 20 PSI, better yet what's the formula?

Moderna is better than Pfizer or Astra-Zeneca or J&J vaccines.

No.13654819 ViewReplyOriginalReport
In a study released last week, the CDC found that Moderna was significantly more effective against hospitalizations and emergency department or urgent care encounters than the Pfizer or J&J vaccines.

While the 3 vaccines were collectively 86% effective in preventing hospitalization, protection was significantly higher among Moderna vaccine recipients (95%) than among those who got Pfizer-BioNTech (80%) or Johnson & Johnson (60%). That finding echoes a smaller study by the Mayo Clinic Health System in August, not yet peer-reviewed, which showed the Moderna vaccine to be more effective than Pfizer-BioNTech at preventing infections during the delta wave.

It raises questions about whether the two vaccines should be treated the same way policy-wise.

"There have been sort of signals from enough separate sources that start to paint a picture that may reflect a real biological phenomenon — a real difference. I’m starting to believe that there’s something underlying it," said Natalie Dean, an Emery professor who specializes in vaccine study design.

The large CDC study that found a significant difference in the vaccines' effectiveness found that Moderna's was higher across all ages.

Recent data suggests that Moderna's coronavirus vaccine may maintain a higher effectiveness over time than Pfizer's.
