Not a mathematician, but I think they gave us the means to create economies. Probably architecture as well. Also probably a lot of technology we wouldn't have figured out without. Also without learning math you wouldn't be able to tell how much money your welfare check is.

my guess is back emf from the electrons flowing through the lightning ionizes noble gasses in the upper atmosphere. or maybe and or in conjunction with electrons flowing upwards can sometimes shoot off the strike and wind up traveling further into the atmosphere sort of like a reflection or reverse lighting essentially
