I'm going to wager a guess, but a singular tone frequency inherently doesn't "sound good" to us. If I played a C, you would just hear it as it is.

However, if I played a C and a G, all of a sudden your brain instantly compares the two frequencies and understands them as a whole "sound". From here, the difference in frequency, a 'major fifth' in the music world, creates a Dissonance (important term) that then associates the freq. difference in accordance to a particular understanding. Major fifths are usually categorized as a "stable, grand" sound, where as major fourths tend to be quite mystical, soft, yet approachable.

It's also the difference between a sus4 chord and a major chord due to the anticipation/tension that the sus4 chord has due to frequencies that exist outside of the major chord frequency.

TL;DR, All music is, is just an arrangement of various frequencies ebbing and flowing in and out at different times throughout time. What causes things to sound "good" is when frequencies harmonize within their relative context established within the environment within the sound.

Why do humans find music appealing? Not sure, but if I were to wager ANOTHER guess, I'd say that it's similar to why we appreciate and hate certain sounds in an evolutionary sense. When you hear a fly buzzing near your ear, when you hear nails on the chalkboard, etc. Perhaps part of your amygdala is activated when hearing conflicting frequencies coexist simultaneously, such as the "Tritone"

Though, a LOT of what sounds "good" especially when it comes to music is extreeeemely environment and conditioning-based. A lot of traditional western music is built around12 tone equal temperament which, I assume, became widespread through colonization. However, the most interesting music comes from a lot of Eastern sources that standardized their own tonal tuning systems, creating a wide array of tonal and microtonal harmonies that we can't even imagine.

I don't normally go out of my way to listen, but Jacob Collier is literally a wizard when it comes to tonal relationships and musical construction. He realizes the importance of telling an actual story through chord progressions, eliciting emotional responses around every subtle shift in frequency. Not saying that his music is the greatest of all time, but you have to appreciate just the amount of absolute guts to develop and navigate the chords he's able to construct.

I've had this thought as a kid and there's a couple problems with it:
-Penguins rely on the fact that they're safe on land from predators. They're experienced with dealing with Leopard Seals, but Polar Bears might devastate them.
-Antarctica doesn't have the same 'kind' of Ice: its' ice is mostly on land instead of a sheet over the water. Polar Bears need sheet-water-ice so they can hunt seals when they expose their dumb faces out of their breathing holes.
-Antartica is warming up too. Not as much, mind you, but they're starting get a bit of a summer these days (pic related).

because the earth is spinng AND is tilted AND its distance from the sun changes. not to mention fluid dynamics tend to be chaotic. its reasonabke to assume equilibrium is basically impossible. thus convective currents.

The only things you need to know before mucking around with settings are

An interval is the amount of time before you see a card again, and steps are fixed intervals before a Learning card becomes a Review card.

My pic shows Anki decks' default settings. I'll go through what I consider the most important options.
Don't forget, you can apply different settings to individual decks.

This means after you answer a new card correctly, you'll see it again in 1 minute. If you answer it correctly again, you'll see it in 10 minutes, and if you answer it correctly again, it graduates into a Review card and its interval is set to the Graduating Interval.
If you answer incorrectly at any step before graduating, the card returns to the first step.

You can have more than 2 steps, and some people use longer intervals here before graduating. I use 1 7 1440 2880 (1440 minutes = 1 day), so my final step before graduating new cards is a 2 day interval. Some people set their final step to a week or even longer.

This can have a huge impact on your time and retention. Unless you're already very familiar with the material or don't mind spending a lot more time in reviews, I strongly recommend keeping this number lower (in the single digits).

I just have this at 9999, the highest possible. It hasn't impacted me at all. If you set a max, you're just handicapping the scheduling algorithm.
If you ever have a problem with spending too much time on reviews, that's a lagging indicator of too many New Cards/Day.

When you answer a Review card correctly, its new interval is calculated as $c+(c*m)$
where c is the current interval and m is the Interval Modifier.
So a lower modifier = more frequent reviews, and vice versa.

If you feel you're failing reviews too frequently, you should try reducing this modifier.

Remember, this setting is applied to an entire DECK.
In all likelihood, some decks will be more difficult than others, so I strongly recommend you create different options groups for different decks.

This functions exactly the same as the New Cards' steps, except these steps are applied to Reviewed cards that you answer incorrectly. Just like New Cards, a Lapsed card graduates into a Review card. However...

EVEN IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, CHANGE THIS
This sets how much of a Review card's interval to retain after graduating as a Lapsed card. By default, if you ever answer a Review card incorrectly, its interval will reset to 0.

For example, let's say you have a Review card with a 200 day interval and answered incorrectly once.
With New Interval set to 0, after the card graduates, it would retain 0% of the 200-day interval.
If New Interval was set at 10, the card would retain 10% of the 200-day interval.

Personally, I think this should be somewhere between 10 and 60, depending on how familiar you are with the deck.

>Leech action
This is just what happens after a card passes the Leech threshold. For most people I'd recommend changing this to Tag Only. I think most people never browse their library to manage their automatically-suspended cards.
