I severed my finger in the lab and have gotten it surgically reattached. I'm a heavy smoker(up to 2 packs a day) cuz phdstress and have been told to lay off it while healing due to nicotine being a vasoconstrictor and thus reducing blood flow hindering healing. This got me thinking. To what extent is medicine used to the opposite effect in modern surgery? Is pharmaceutics that increase blood flow prescribed post-surgery? And how does it work from a medical perspective? Is it just the speed of nutrient supply and waste removal?
Tell me more medfags, human biology is exciting.

Take the advice but dont count on a full recovery. I once strained my finger, not severed, just a tendon issue. The doctor gave me a cortisone injection, said it was a permanent cure but basically the finger has been "funny" for 10 years already.

Not even remotely interesting. Colleague banged fumehood window with ceramic coffee cup. Window just cracked and a 2 pound section just fell down and guillotined my finger off at the knuckle joint. So far healing has been good, and I have enough contacts at the hospital to make sure the best surgeon worked on it. Thanks Brian, you're an artist.

the vasoconstriction is probably not a big deal if you are an addict, your body has made the adjustments but at the same time, any vasoconstriction at all affects fingers and toes more than anything else
increased blood flow probably does nothing, you need increased igf1 so that all the shit heals to it's full extent, because it grows all the things, tissue, bone, cartilage and nerves, the important part

Respiratory failure is associated with increased mortality in COVID-19 patients. There are no validated lower airway biomarkers to predict clinical outcome. We investigated whether bacterial respiratory infections were associated with poor clinical outcome of COVID-19 in a prospective, observational cohort of 589 critically ill adults, all of whom required mechanical ventilation. For a subset of 142 patients who underwent bronchoscopy, we quantified SARS-CoV-2 viral load, analysed the lower respiratory tract microbiome using metagenomics and metatranscriptomics and profiled the host immune response. Acquisition of a hospital-acquired respiratory pathogen was not associated with fatal outcome. Poor clinical outcome was associated with lower airway enrichment with an oral commensal (Mycoplasma salivarium). Increased SARS-CoV-2 abundance, low anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody response and a distinct host transcriptome profile of the lower airways were most predictive of mortality. Our data provide evidence that secondary respiratory infections do not drive mortality in COVID-19 and clinical management strategies should prioritize reducing viral replication and maximizing host responses to Sars-Cov-2.

Way more effective than that. Stop confusing the mRNA “vaccine” with the tried-and-true vaccines.

mRNAhas around 30% effectiveness but you still reach infectious stage and pass the illnesses on, with many (3 out of 4) reaching full illnesses stage.

Normal vaccines halt disease progression prior to both the infectious and symptom stages.
