If she dies then we're unfortunately rehashing episode 1 Find/Replace Family with Fang. We've seen how he is when he's lost it all and is out on his own. BUT, we have yet to see him when he ALMOST loses everything, and potentially still could during some nebulous recovery stage. We get what happens if she dies, he grows bitter, maybe suicidal, lashes out yet again and then finds a partner. Not bad, but been there done that, and this is a short series. We could see him try to survive on his own, which might be unique, but ultimately its just not something wholly different.
Whereas if he's placed in a situation where he has to protect her from danger, we could callback to Episode 1 without rehashing it. We could have him relive the experience, but not repeat it if you know what I mean. The ideal would be having him deal with the fact he very very nearly almost watched her die, and how he deals with that pain. Does he help her back on her feet and then run so he doesn't have to be there when it happens? Does he get overprotective to the point where Fang resents him and feels weak herself that she was so badly beaten? Where does the power dynamic go if Spear's Hulk Mode isn't totally gone, and he's physically very powerful? Does she have to become the brains of the outfit now?
From pure storytelling alone, one path offers a familiar retread that needs walked before they can find a new ground that might or might not be learning to love again, but another offers a whole hosts of paths that have no set destination and are all new.
