I always do an under painting in a warm tone, either orange red or yellow, but leave the brightest areas or focal point without the under painting. That is more so that I make a mental note that I want the viewer to focus there, so my detail/color radiates from that area. After that, I always go very heavy on paint, I tend to really like the 'marbling' effect of multiple unmixed paints, but will sometimes do washes for areas that need to be softer edged. I want to get more practice with washes though as I dont feel as comfortable with them.
