Take objects that have at least two different kind of materials - ie. fabrics, metals, glass, ceramics, whatever.
Look at still life paintings that have arrangements that appeal to you. Go for something like that.
Use a single light source. Multiple light sources are a recipe for fucking things up.
Take your time. Your objects won't degrade so you have the time to work. Paint in stages, using oil diluted with mineral spirits at first, and as you build your layers up use your oil medium.
