Marvel tightened its purse strings because it could, there was a glut of young college "talent" that were willing to work for peanuts so they increasingly became staffed by a host of incompetent and inexperienced fresh-out-of-college morons.
Who had grown up with social media, and having no concept of professionalism, saw no problem with acting like children online while serving as de facto spokespeople for their employer.
The milkshake picture isn't the issue. Its how these marvel employees responded when a small number of trolls called out the picture. Not just in dropping to the trolls' level which would've been bad enough, but in attempting to spin the milkshake issue into the 21st century equivalent of the civil rights movement. Some guys said this group was a buncha incompetents (they were), the group spun it as "every comic book fan is a massive misogynist" to make themselves feel better.
Honestly, the real issue isn't a "social justice" issue, its the hiring of children and acting surprised they they act like children. Disney/Marvel making crazy money from the comics R&D division while putting next to zero dollars back into it.
