There's literally no way of knowing at this point. Sozin started the war, and the fire nation already seemed to be more technologically advance than everyone else at that point, and Ozai was constantly trotting out new technological marvels to fuck up the earth nation with but for all we know, Azulon might have just been holding them back from winning the war completely the whole time.

He was probably in charge during the Southern Water Tribe raids when they were taking all of the Waterbenders
He was probably in charge when the Southern Raiders killed Katara and Sokka's mother.

Hard to say if he was in charge when the Mechanist started building weapons for the Fire Nation at the Northern Air Temple

He seemed to at least LIKE Iroh enough to get mad at his comment. Actualy, now that I think about it, a good chunk of the resentment and psyche of Ozai was for being the unfavorite son.

I have heard it said that due to Nickelodeon censorship practices, he had to say "You will see what it's like to LOSE your son." rather than "You will see what it's like to have your son killed." or something similar, meaning that Azulon could very well have just taken Zuko away from Ozai and given him to Iroh to be his heir, thus cutting Ozai out of the line of succession forever.

I remember an interview with Mike and Bryan where the interviewer asks them about Sozin's age since Zuko Alone clearly says he only ruled for 23 years at his funeral and they where positively sure the episode said 75 and even told the guy to rewatch the episode.
Not sure how that important detail slipped by the writing team.

War is expensive and they had just wiped out an entire civilization and were making good progress on destroying the water tribes as well, and had managed to anex much of the earth kingdom, by the time Ozai took over only Ba sing se and a few earth kingdom city states here and there were left. Keep in mind the earth kingdom is the size of pretty much every landmass on earth put together.
You've heard the expression "never fight a land war in asia"? well the fire nation was fighting a land war in pangea.

Azulon's reign saw them pressing further inland reaching and failing to capture Ba Sing Se. Also the beginning of the Fire Nation's raids against the Southern Water Tribe.

The issue with that fought is that Azulon actually did most of the relevant conquering and has some of the most important monuments(including the Gates of Azulon, which are both a monument to his glory and a defensive measure for the capital).

He was thanks to the retarded timeline in order to make a hundred year war happen and so Sozin and Roku could be childhood friends.

Sozin was 70 when Roku died, 12 years later the comet came and he died when he was like a hundred.

That leaves Ozai becoming Fire Lord about 8 years before the comet comes back.

They kinda screwed stuff up in terms of the Fire Lord timeline.

Azulon ruled until 5 years before the show started.
Since Sozin dies 20 years after the war begins(at 102), that makes his rule 75 years.
However, when we first have his reign mentioned in show:

Which would mean Sozin somehow lived until 154.

Honestly Ursa sacrificing herself and then Ozai killing Azulon when he was distracted is a better story than Ursa poisoning Azulon and then running away.

The official story will of course be that Azulon died of old age but in first scenario Ozai comes off as a hero who tried to save his wife from his insane father, while in the second scenario Ozai's wife poisoning a Fire Lord and then disappearing doesn't look good at all.

It could have been done either way really. But I guess the fire nation supported the monarchy and Azulon for long enough that it would have been difficult for Ozai to win support after publicly killing him. (Not that it took long for people to accept Zuko after his usurping in the end, but whatever)

Plus Ursa straight up murdering the fire lord herself fits that foreshadowing of her talking to Zuko about how the mother duck would do anything to stop someone that threatened its baby.

Zuko won the throne from Azula fair and square when she descended into madness. They would have been happy to serve a proper person rather than her. Ozai was taken out of the picture by Aang which was separate and the whole point of what Iroh said.

The Fire Nation didn't lose the war in a traditional sense. They were kicking the shit out of the rest of the world for a hundred years and then they had a coup and decided to stop the war.

This should have some huge ramifications. Politics wise Zuko would have his work cut out for him, you could write countless political thrillers on the shit Zuko would have to deal with everyday. Also the Fire Nation has the biggest economy in the world and it would still be that way by the time of LoK.

The fact that we know that Azulon was born after the extermination of the air nomads and we know how old Sozin was at the time from knowing both how old he was when he became fire lord and how long it was when the air genocide happened.

While we're at it we also know that Kyoshi aparently lived for over 200 years because Bryke couldn't do math and we also know that the avatar couldn't have possibly lived "thousands of lifetimes" because the avatar has only been a thing for 10,000 years.

This is one of the few things the comics did that I liked,They made it clear that Zuko was incredibly unpopular among the people of the fire nation, was dodging assassinations on an almost daily basis had to deal with multiple attempted coups and wasn't liked by the rest of the world either, if it wasn't for Aang and the Kyoshi warriors he would have been dead many times over.

The Fire Nation was lucky the Earth Kingdom was both war weary and the Earth King wasn't vengeful. In reality someone like Kuvira would have popped up soon after the war.

The situation in the Earth Kingdom is a different matter entirely. The Earth King would be an ally of peace but I don't think he could realistically maintain order without the Dai Li. Remember he was just a figure head who now has all the power and no idea how to use it.

I'd picture things playing out that way. Maybe not Long Feng specifically but a slow return to the previous status quo when the Earth King relied on advisors to run everything. These advisors could later be a source of conflict with the the Fire Nation as they take over the negotiations and demand reparations which the citizens of the Fire Nation are not willing to pay.

That or they should have just embraced the idea that people can live extremely long times in the Avatar universe and just made Azulon about the same age as Bumi.
