Man, This King's run is the most fun I've had reading Batman in a while. Yeah, Snyders run was smart, gritty, and whatever else people say about it, but it always felt stuffy, even when I was enjoying it.

Probably haven't enjoyed Batman this much since Morrison's Dick and Damian run.

Normally I would get mad at this, but then I remembered that Superman's identity was exposed not too long ago and the only reason it became "secret" again was that Mxyzptlk pretended to be Clark Kent. This can easily be explained by Catwoman just not buying the official story.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I was really disliking it in the beginning but towards the end it got better.

I still have a hard time thinking Bruce and Clark would feel they aren't good enough for each other.

However Selina knowing Superman is Clark poses a bit of a danger. Nevertheless it reminds me of a certain Brave and the Bold issue where she drags him to a heist (with the pretext of helping Batman) and unknowingly gives him something similar to his civilian look and Clark is super nervous about it.

There was that one time in Hush where Selina dangled Lois from a building and let her drop to get Superman to snap out of his mind control. Clark was worried Bruce told her his secret ID and Bruce was like "Naaaah I just told her to grab any random person in the Daily Planet and she picked Lois".

King's Batman doesn't have character progression, he is actually regressing as a character. Letting criminals go free because his future wife said so, being a mopey manchild with King playing up the "Bruce is so broken" tropes neglecting the Bat-Family's influence in favor of Catwoman (and I don't even like the Bat-Family) and that's not even getting into the completely out-of-character moments like Bruce handing Catwoman a shotgun to kill a horse or the non-existent plot or the illogical and godawful Catwoman pandering.

And as far as romance goes, King royally screwed up even on that front. You cannot honestly tell me that what he is writing between Batman and Catwoman is even remotely good. I don't care if they are getting hitched - it's still badly written schlock that belongs among the myriad of shitty sex novels written by horny housewives. The fact that them getting married and trying to divert attention to how badly others are doing is your only defense speaks volumes of how bad King's stuff actually is, if his fans can't even find anything substantial to call good beyond Batman and Catwoman's marriage.

While I mostly hated the issue, and yes that strongly of a dislike, it was a decent payoff for the build up. I think we all knew the "from the ground" "from the sky" angle was at play.

I will also note that king had the six panel in the mommy issue when he was drawing the parallel between Bane and Bats. I think that was a nice way to both make the parallel and call back the other one which seems pretty intentional. The man who broke him and the man he looks up to so much he's embarrassed to tell him he's getting married because he seems to think it'd be inconsequential.

Many, many, MANY people should have gone public with this information if its so easy to figure out. Catwoman is not a super genius, she's just perceptive. If catwoman can see through it, then superman basically doesnt have a secret identity! He fights people FAR smarter than her!

Superman's identity working is just a side effect of the setting. Its like a bat book going for the "WHY DOESNT BATMAN JUST KILL THE JOKER IF HE ALWAYS BREAKS OUT", it selectively applies real world logic to a fantastical setting. It's lazy writing that compromises the integrity of the world just to make a character seem smarter than they are actually being.

Why I am Bane is bad? Because it was just filled with empty action. It had some great character moments between the Robins (character moments seem to be where King shines) but the main plot was boring and predictable as Hell. "Bane is coming to kill us all." The climax was completely dull too, just reducing to a series of pages where they punch each other really hard until Bruce wins.

The plot is simple, Yes. But that is the point. Bane during khingfall was one of bruce's biggest threats because he knew where to prioritize his weaknesses, here it is done, in a simpler way with the robins. also the goal of bane is not to kill bruce, it is only the psycho pirate, and the final battle is not just a fight, read the dialogue, it is a constant that bruce saw hope in ceasing to be batman with the gotham brothers. Without hurting anyone from the batfamily, but it went wrong. Everything about martha's spirit at the end is a symbolism that he did enough, that the objective was only to avenge his parents in a personal way, but he ends up with bruce saying that he did everything to help someone who needed him, gotham girl. Not only the death of their parents, that is what it is to be a hero, to help those who need it, not just revenge.

I understand all of that and can see what King was *trying* to do with the dialog, but all just felt so heavy handed and done in such a way that it loses focus. It wasn't as bad as I Am Suicide, but so many of the links between the established characters and the themes King was going for were tenuous at best and were easily broken down; the flashbacks to Bane's childhood being a great example.

I know, and as I said, the execution on this did not come off well. It was just a lazy rehash of the "We're not so different, you and I" trope that we've seen a dozen times from Batman villains. I think this issue perfectly encapsulates why I love and hate King. He goes with this hamfisted mirrored self reference style of writing that sounds like a mix of catch phrases and sitcom talk, as if it's reluctant actors playing Batman and Superman, not actually Batman and Superman. But then he's so fantastic at sticking the landing, at delivering these great fantastic endings that you almost forget how hammy the lead up was. I can't help but smile at this ending, even though the first half was meh. He's always got great twists, and great resolutions, it's just that it could be so much better if his setup and buildup was better. Still, I'm enjoying it. He's much better at writing moments than long issues and arcs. One shots, miniseries, and those single pages that people love to post in "best page" threads seem to play to his strengths the most

He's written good comics, but he's garbage on Batman. And that doesn't mean it can't be entertaining. But I take it, since you're out of the loop, you don't spend money on this.
