>>97086574It was insanely progressive. Uhura was groundbreaking. There's that story about Whoopi Goldberg channel surfing as a little girl and seeing Star Trek. She was enraptured by Uhura and - in her own words - ran screaming through her house shouting 'MAMA! There's a black woman on TV and she ain't no maid!' You don't even need to get into the lore to realize that Uhura is a senior bridge officer on the Enterprise. DURR SHE ONLY ANSWERS PHONES.
Despite the fuckery the network pulled with Nichols, MLK convinced her to stay on the show because of the positive portrayal of a black character on a mainstream TV show.
And for the 60s, well - Spock was at first considered too demonic because of his ears, McCoy was a Southern Baptist (you know, the one stereotype as drunken redneck hicks), Sulu was Japanese (notice how the comic doesn't mention him), Chekov was Russian during the height of the Cold War and Scotty was... well, Scottish. Ask a Scott about how often they got portrayed as capable and not just violent drunken louts. But most of those guys are white, so it doesn't count.
