Well I would have preferred if the Divorce Subplot had never happened in the first place, especially considering that season two had like 4 or 5 reconciliation episodes like the couples counseling one and the inter dimensional cable subplot, that just ended up being contradicted and made pointless, but I guess that this is the best we could hope for.

To play devil’s advocate here, it could be that Harmon had already planned out the First episode as Rick escaping and Beth and Jerry divorcing and refused to let the new writers change it because he was a stubborn sadsack ass, so they just had to work with it until they could undo it.

This season they had both the opportunity to turn Beth into an interesting character and the opportunity to turn Jerry into an interesting character. They did neither. In that sense they have guaranteed that the B-plots of Rick and Morty will forever be meaningless fluff, most likely stuck on to give mundane people with mundane tastes something to latch onto in this experimental, improvised crazy sci-fi narrative they have going on. But on the whole very little has changed.

I would have hoped they learned what Futurama learned after the "roomate problems" episode 3 that the network told them to make: that such things are ultimately self-defeating and dragging the whole project down, but you take what you can get.

I find it so funny that people keep expecting Evil Morty to be this huge storyline. After the first episode, people were thinking he would be this huge mastermind, and then they had a one off episode that ties back to him. I think it's more that fans want an ongoing narrative when it's really just going to be inconsistent bullshit adventures.

My potentially shitty opinion incoming.

They set up an interesting storyline with evil Morty, and didn't use it. They had a chance to bring back Tammy/Phoenix person as formidable villain, and they didn't use it.

Instead we just hit the reset button, basically. Beth and Jerry are back together, and there was no obvious cliffhanger at all. If they intentionally did this to allude to the "nothing matters" concept, then... okay? You did it, but it wasn't necessarily entertaining in its own right. The episode and jokes were alright, but it truly felt like a filler episode, and that makes it function poorly as a finale. Almost like they wanted to include more episodes at the end of this season, but were already taking way too long? But that's just conjecture on my part.

Even if the Beth storyline this episode concluded with her questioning her existence as the "real" Beth, that would have at least given us something to ponder after the season is over. Instead she just sort of accepts it, and now we're status quo.

I imagine it could be interesting to consider the encounter when the original Beth comes back to find her clone back with Jerry, if that's truly how things go down. Couldn't THAT have been the after credits scene instead of Mr. Poopybutthole reminding us that, not only was this a less than satisfactory end, but we'll have to wait an extra long time for new material? Thanks a lot Rick and Morty team, I guess?

Maybe I'm just fucking stupid, but this felt super disappointing. I don't know. At least the concepts they've yet to explore like evil Morty can still be done in the future.

Best Episode: The Rickshank Redemption

Though I did like the drama-rich resolution to the drama-rich finale of the previous season, I like those story arcs to be compartmentalized. The whole divorce plotline and all the "darkest season of Rick and Morty" shit surrounding it felt pointless and poorly-paced and got in the way of the overall draw of the series which is humor.

Honorable Mention: The Ricklantis Mixup aka Tales from the Citadel. Though I didn't like it as much as most since I felt no attachment to anyone there and don't care about some grand Evil Morty plotline, it was fun to watch and done in a way that lent itself well to the humor of the show.
Weakest: Rickmancing the Stone. It was just had a pretty painful and dry pace and humor.

Id argue that there is a difference between "whacky adventures" humor and "whacky black dark shit" in which the latter is the defining basis of the show. The former we already had before, hell you can probably count in MLP.

Season 2 and the latter part of season 1 was when they started using fucked up shit. I will admit that continuity is something that drags down the series and season 3 is super reliant on continuity.

There's shocking dark, ala the Jellybean King and then there's emotional dark, ala "Nature" from Moral Orel. Rick and Morty has always been great with the former, pushing the right boundaries while still preserving some grounder perspective so it doesn't look like an extended "Aristocrats" joke ala Family Guy, but it hasn't done so well with the latter when it tried. Which it did a lot in Season 3.

When they announced 14 long episodes this season, do you remember told us that they will be 10 episodes when they announce their release date?
I think that happened.
Both Harmon and Roeland were planning 14 episodes, but since they caught up with writing at their own admission and took time to start, the episode was reduced to 10 and the story cut had to be cut. Suddenly the season was over like him.
In short, everything worked fine. Nothing happened. I felt that we are making something. Mortar kicks with family, Rick kills home clone and jerry, and Morti is placed in a position to protect mother and father from grandfather. Shit! But that is over ... end. He brought a gun to kill Jerry, but he does not use it and just gives up. They talk and return to the dining room and all go back to normal. I can not imagine what Harmon and Roland wanted is a climax. It is not after the season to build this plot.

Finale felt a little lopsided, pretty great up until the last few minutes when suddenly a single moment of Jerry and "Beth" liking each other suddenly reversed everything.

All the stuff with the President and Rick fixing things just to be petty was A material, but the episode hit a wall hard at the end. It felt like it was intended to have a different ending and then they ran out of time to do it so they wrote that one.

Good season overall, though.

I don't think the show is dead, but now Harmon can't get away with being a huge, autistic asshole. In the first two seasons, he alienated the writers with his stubbornness, so he talked Justin into firing them all for social justice. Now that the writers have been replaced, Harmon can't do it again. Considering all of the shit that happened this season, we know Harmon was the reason so many episodes sucked, and why they were delivered so late, so the writers will know to work with Justin to make Rick and Morty great again.

Naw, I fucking loved it.

I loved seeing all the wacky shit the president's team had been making- especially when Rick had some smart ass remark about everything.
I loved how Rick fucking lost and that none of his intelligence fucking mattered because he's really just a big dipshit who can't even keep his family in order and will never be happy.
I loved that Jerry 'won' and ultimately all it took for him to win was to be consistent and dumb.
I loved that they finally addressed Rick & Morty's relationship with America.
"WHAT DID YOU DO WITH YOUR 3 YEARS? I HOPE YOU DIDN'T JUST FUCK AROUND- WASTING AWAY YOUR TIME!"

If I had to bitch about anything:
It wasn't a 'good' season finale, I think the pacing was really off and felt almost as if they needed maybe 2-3 more episodes in there just to finish off a few things or maybe work some shit out, ya know? We never really got to see what happened with the bug people, phoenix-person was just straight up not acknowledged.
It just felt really rushed outta the door as if they maybe had a different subplot planned or something, but they were runnin' outta' time and they just had to staple this one into the show and finish it all up.

BUt either way I fucking loved it. Great Episode. Good. Lotta fun. Minecraft causes autism. DINOSAUR. STRIPPER.

Also, I've been kind of craving Rick encountering or having to deal with someone "not as intelligent" as him in a kind of wacky-invention fight that isn't just another fucking RICK and this kind of satiated that.

Even if they are developing something with Evil Morty him showing up now makes no sense and the Citadel could just be a check-in for later. ALthough I figure he'll either disappear with no mention or explanation or be offed in an anti-climatic way.

This episode was just kind of typical. Rick btfo some jerky nemesis. He's always right. But then there's drama and conflict with his family. There is Jerry and Beth drama and shit again. It was pretty standard with a few good jokes but not as many good jokes as better R&M episodes, even episodes in this season, which I thought was pretty good overall.

This episode was just average on its own merits.

If anything I felt like this episode did pretty much exactly what they needed to do to save the show in season 4. Pretty much everyone can agree that edgelord characters and relationship drama was a mistake that ruined season 3. As long as the follow through with the reset to status quo that they've set up season 4 could go back to being good. Just give us more lighthearted adventures without all of the angst (and preferably without the forced hyperviolent action scenes every single episode).

I can't say I trust Justin and the crew to actually save this show, but this episode was promising.

It wasn't perfect, but it was fun watching Rick basically fight an enemy on somewhat even footing, and then ultimately meeting his match.

The twist as that they are identical so it doesn't matter. Let's just say that Beth "chose" to stay, but Rick made a clone that "chose" to leave. Does it matter? No, but of course there's going to be a Beth that's traveling the cosmos (whether it be a clone, the original, or one from another reality) because it's Chekhov's gun. And, frankly, for a show that acts like it's on the cutting-edge of identity conflicts, it sure does forget the basic lessons that Star Trek taught us: that two identical people are equally identical and are equally that person regardless of origin.

They'll never stop the action trash scenes - that's just something I'd like to happen. This episode seemed like it served to end the divorce drama trash, and the characters outright say that the dynamic will be more like season 1 again. Hopefully they stick with that.

I liked it. I kind of hoped for more development along the Evil Morty lines, but it's also nice that the show is going to backpedal a bit on the depression and family drama shit.

I mean I liked this season overall because it wasn't afraid to treat its characters like actual human beings caught up in an insane world, but I was afraid it was just going to go on, and on, and on. Eventually it would be just a sci-fi-flavored Bojack Horseman. At least they seem like they're just going to have everyone be cool for a little while, and if tonight's episode is any indication I'm interested in seeing what Rick and Morty get up to without being dragged down by emotional baggage all the time.

Here's hoping, anyways.

And that's basically where Rick an Morty has left off: a bunch of people who recognize the awful and terrifying parts of themselves and the world around them, but agree to work together to move on. Except for Rick, who simply jumps to a different reality where he won't have to deal with their emotional bullshit, which technically is a very Absurdist thing to do because for Rick changing his point of view is practically as easy as changing a channel.

That was what made this whole episode garbage, we had episodes like that in the first two seasons. Rick Potion #9 was fantastic with that where you get sucker punched that to keep status quo Rick dives to a new reality and buries the now dead versions of themselves and go about as usual.
But this finale? Fuck sake's you might as well have the ending cut off 5 minutes early with Dan shrugging going "that's it, we are starting over season 4, full reboot."

What are you talking about they've been setting it up the entire season? Every time Beth appears, she's a little more unwound, a little more... obsessed. She gets extremely defensive at the therapist and agrees to go drinking with Rick immediately after learning he lied to her and was literally almost about to kill himself to avoid going to therapy with her. She always needed Jerry to keep herself grounded, we just never saw it until he spent a season off the show. Taking care of Jerry what makes her feel like her life has meaning--he's the Habitat For Humanity project that makes her feel like she's doing something good for the world, something hard that most people don't have the compassion to do. That was essentially the main arc of this entire season.

The first season drove that with every episode. Look at interdimensional cable, a gag at the start that shows Jerry is famous in another world leads to Rick throwing them a bone to watch what their lives could have been through a 3D screen. So while Rick and Morty are having shits and giggles with improv tv, Beth, Summer and Jerry are all suffering some form of life crisis, Summer is hating her life has been a burden to others and it takes Morty to help her understand she can't control anything like that and she needs to accept the life she has with a throw back about 4 episodes ago and we see Beth and Jerry come to terms that discovering in worlds where they had everything but each other, they rather throw it away than live without the other. And this is done in the same episode where a guy with ants in his eyes burns alive in a commercial.

That kind of fun storytelling, is no where in season 3.

After how big the season 2 finale was, this episode was absolutely underwhelming. Sure season 1's finale wasn't some grand event but it at least FELT like a finale, though. Some shit happens, time is frozen, and everyone has to clean stuff up. It's like the way season 1 ended gave the characters a reason to take a break from adventures, and it was an entertaining episode in its own right. But this was nothing. There's probably a couple more episodes in this season that would have been a better season finale.

Everything in the second half felt so rushed. Like did anybody notice how the President was suddenly an equal fighter to Rick even though in the scene right before it showed how much more powerful Rick was and that it didn't even matter? Rick apparently had some personal problem with the President but it wasn't explained or explored at all. Morty brings it up, but that's it. Also Morty brought his family to this isolated cabin all of a sudden and I guess him and Summer are kind of fine with Jerry being there?? No questions? I feel like Jerry coming back to the family would probably be a bigger deal considering how the rest of the season went. And it ends with Beth thinking she's a clone but not caring because she loves her family.....okay. Honestly the clone part was a thousand times more interesting than the fight with the president that made no sense and didn't have much of a reason to exist in the first place but I guess that's their big climax or something? Then even that whole feud just ends with "Hey I'm a new Rick we don't need to fight okay bye." Why did everything feel like it was a last-minute addition?

I just don't get the point of this episode. It's underwhelming on its own and it's the finale? I couldn't even tell it was the finale until the post-credits scene. Maybe they should have used the Citadel episode as the finale, or even that Beth episode from last week. Either one would have felt like a better finale than...this. So boring.

Season 3 seems to be terribly disjointed, first by a need for continuity and deep character introspective (usually with a speech) and then by random acts of absurdity. Its was well meshed together in the latter part of the 1st season and in season 2; season 3 was rather strict with separating the two to the point we have 2 episodes where the 4 wall was broken early to reassure everyone that its not part of the story.

But like I said, the reason we didn't see Beth as a sociopath is because he hadn't really seen Beth without Jerry. We knew she had a competitive streak, and arguably a kind of cruelty towards those she considered beneath her, but most of her job was to keep Jerry from fucking everything up. She thought Jerry was holding her back from greatness, but he was really keeping her worst impulses in check, and that shit was directly shown in Interdimensional Cable, Season 1.

In that alternate dimension where Beth and Jerry never got married, Beth is an alcoholic wreck, filling her life with meaningless affection for birds. Beth desperately needs something to care for, because otherwise she has to admit that she cares about nothing. Her life goal is to be a surgeon, people and/or horse doesn't matter--she LIKES fixing things. Or at least, she believes it's her responsibility to fix things because she knows she's capable enough and there's no one else around to do it. Isn't it a little telling that of basically all the universes they've examined, virtually all of them have Beth together with Jerry? (Except for all the Jerries that die/get left at DayCare, I supposed)

I liked the episode, it was a lot of fun and the jokes were good. Lorefags are mad but at the end of the day R&M shines when it focuses on exciting and funny instead of family drama shit.

My only qualm is the god-Rick stuff gets old after enough time, but I was okay with it since it was funny and the Rick/president battle was pretty great.

Beth stayed home, and sent the clone out to go explore and find her purpose. I feel like that question of "What could I have been" is echoing in her head, and through the clone living such a life, she'd know.

Especially if she gets all the memories of the clone, then she wins both ways. She wouldn't have abandoned her family like she feared Rick would do but also would have learned what she could have been...and if the clone came back when she had a empty nest...she could slip into her clone's shoes, (with Jerry by her side) getting her cake and eating it too.

(another reason why I think she didn't leave, the trama Rick caused her wouldn't allow her to inflict that Trama onto someone else)

This is why the episode felt "off" - all the ideas were so disjointed. It wasn't objectively bad imo, certainly more re-watchable than certain other episodes this season. But it was like 2 or 3 episodes' worth of ideas got jammed into one and haphazardly stitched together.

Core of the A storyline was entertaining. Seems like "America" was a proxy for the fanbase, at least as seen by Harmon. Literally just R&M bitching about the unrealistic expectations put on them (the show) by viewers, with the plot revolving around them
>blowing off America.
That's about as deep as it goes, but fun to watch in and of itself.

The B storyline...was almost definitely supposed to be a different episode. Beth having her clone meltdown and the finale amounting to Jerry ex machina seems like a rushed combination. I can only hope other people are right that this was shoehorned in as an excuse to remove the drudging family drama that held this season back.

Positive note - always happy to see Keith David back, so there's that.

I can't believe that they went back to the status quo in a single season. There was so much that could have been done with the concept, so much that could have been expanded on and explored.
Also the main plot of the episode was both meaningless and boring, the only part of it that was even half decent was the fight sequence at the end and even that was just meh.

What a shit episode. It clearly demonstrates both a lack of vision and a lack of ambition on the part of the people writing it.

I'm suspicious. Are they going to fuck with us somehow with this? Like, false-baiting fans into hating the finale, then releasing the 'rest'. or if it was just retards dropping the ball. i can't tell.

I did actually find this episode really interesting. There are a lot of questions and room for interpretation, and I actually really liked the ep ending on rick the way it did. It just seems more like the build-up episode for the actual finale plot line to kick in, rather than the finale itself.

For example, they say "no time travel stuff". recent rick-joke about it. But there's too many weird hints at it. Maybe mr. poopybutthole is actually part of the Prime reality, but the main duo we've been following is actually a future rick c-137 trying to recreate the family that was torn apart by the shapeshifters. it's possible some of these episodes are actually rick c-137's MEMORIES, as well as other dimensions. I haven't seen this mentioned enough.

I definitely think they want to have an over-arcing continuity, considering that good care is taken by the artists to have it there in the first place. After all, It gives context to the humor and helps keep the show grounded, otherwise it becomes LOL RANDUMB: The Series.

Of course, the real issue is that a lot of people feel as though this aspect of the show is up it's own ass and takes time away from the funny, good bits. A feeling which has only gotten worse since Rick's fedora speech and the latter half of the season finale.

As for the finale itself, I don't think it was a great episode in it's own right. It was mediocre, rushed, and no amount of evil Morty showing up or end of season SERIOUS DRAMA+stinger could have helped the finale on it's own. In fact, Rick getting knocked off his pedestal might be a great way to flesh out the family's character. However, that doesn't stop the episode from not being very entertaining and mediocre. This finale felt like they had more planned, but had to condense all the story beats into one episode. Which made a mess of an episode in the end.

That bit about Chekov's gun is on the fucking money. The show runners have admitted to doing exactly that in interviews. On one hand it can be seen as lazy, on the other hand they "have 50 different ideas for where they want to take it and don't want to limit themselves to just one." How you want to interpret that, is up to you.

It's part laziness/complacency, part keeping his loyalty in check. And to be fair, part not having any casualties, they probably would've eventually killed that alien but lost some lives in the process.
