>>84824711 My grandma (had) and auntie have it and while I certainly noticed it growing up, I never really considered it "ugly". Nobody ever talked about it like a "condition". Hell, it was never a topic conversation at all- even among my brother and cousins. It was just what it was.
I think I was in junior high school before I even really bothered to want to really know what was going on, and even then, I was just like, "Huh. That's a thing."
I don't recall them having any real skin issues either.
I'm sure that didn't keep my grandma and auntie from being self conscious about it especially while growing up- but I've never met a young woman that wasn't self conscious about some aspect of their body.
And it didn't keep either of them from getting married and having kids.
So while I agree that it's gimmicky, I personally don't mind characters just sort of having it because that's kind of how it was always treated when I was growing up. And if I ever did a bunch of character designs, I wouldn't feel bad about including one with vitiligo- especially if it was an homage to my grandma or auntie- and I wouldn't be particularly pleased at someone suggesting I had some insincere or devious motive in doing so.
In the end, I'm just like, "Who cares?"
