A huge attempt to use /v/tards secondhand sites; reddit, tumblr, forums etc. to spread everything /v/ had collected, and at the time dug out about gaming journalism and indie videogame scene. It took only little bit instilling fear of mods going SJW on them, to tip /v/ over to hysteria.
Nothing that grand or complicated. Mods started to actively hammer threads about videogame journalism and the indie devs, but since /v/ had managed to make everyother site talk about it, the topic bounced back and kept making threads. The more mods deleted these threads, the more people felt like fucking with them.
As stupid as it sounds, everyone got mad about /v/ talking shit towards these people, journalists, hipsters and such. They started tweeting about it, how these threads on /v/ were harassment towarded to them. Misogynist women hating. Game news sites then created articles about it. And this shitstorm kept going on for months. That was fun.
Someone started #GamerGate on twitter to bypass threads getting deleted on every gaming oriented site. Old media unable to understand what anonymous image board is, finally settled to call - something, GamerGate movement. GamerGate never really ment anything, since being GamerGater ment; Someone talking about game journalism and/or game developers in unfavorable tone, or AltRight. It is a kind to when FoxNews created Anonymous.

The whole issue really was that /v/ had managed find out that several reviewers, contest judges, journalists and such, slept or lived together with developers they worked with, even to a point it became money laundering and sabotage.
To SJW the discussion on corruption and favoratism was seen as personal information that was no one elses business, so they kept screaming slurs at it for months.
