Watchmen's a great comic, but there's one thing I don't get. People seem to condemn Rorschach for killing criminals, yet Dr Manhattan goes around blowing up gangster's heads and no one seems to care. What's up with that?

By "people" you mean us the readers, or the civilian population within the story?

If the later, I'd say it's because Manhattan didn't go fight street criminals for long since he's spent most of his career as a government-sanctioned scientist and nuclear deterrent. Either way, it's not very touched upon, but I can assume his govt work completely overshadows what little vigilante career he ever had.

Compare Rorschach, who has been a vigilante his whole life and that's what everyone knows him for.

The comic has Ozy mentioning that he's the only hero to retain public sympathy by the time the story takes place. People don't like Manhattan even the newsvendor takes a jab at the news of him leaving.

It's the whole "getting out of touch with humanity" thing. He must have seen the gangsters as annoyances to get rid of, instead of living people.

It goes in line to how he didn't stop Comedian from shooting the vietcong woman. He just didn't - or couldn't - care enough to keep them alive.

He even reflects upon than himself if I remember correctly.

I personally think that the Comedian shooting the Vietnamese women is the start of his loss of humanity. He was trying so hard to remain human that he neglected the immense power he could of used to save her. From that point on, he made sure that would never happen again.

Well what I do condemn about Rorschach, and this is what I've seen people condemn him about too, is that he doesn't consider circumstances and causes, any criminal act gets the same punishment regardless if it was self deffence, a neccesity or a taste in the person who commited it.
