>>81208647The first being to actually wear the crown was Gunther, and in his mutated lizard brain he wanted nothing more than to be as much like Evergreen as he could be, in skill and "wisdom."
However, since Evergreen had really only ever been abusive and narcissistic, those were the personal traits attributed to "wisdom" in Gunther's mind.
The crown must have malfunctioned or been damaged in the asteroid strike because it seems to impose the original Gunther's backfired wish on every later wearer and drive them insane.
We see the virtual representation of a young lad dressed in medieval garb who apparently only wore the crown once, but long enough for his personality to be absorbed by the crown. One guy apparently wore it long enough to convince himself that he was literally Santa Claus. Then there's original Gunther, who seems completely like his normal self as seen in the episode Evergreen. Also, the virtual personality of young Simon, completely coherent and even remembering Marceline well enough to recognize her as an adult.
Penguin Gunther is actually a Lovecraftian destroyer-god from space and is somehow immune to the crown's madness-inducing power, and also powerful enough to provide Betty with a means to alter the crown's internal functions.
The crown seems to take away from each wearer, but then somehow adds bits and pieces from previous wearers. Betty's "virus" must have been trying to adjust the crown so that Simon's original personality would shine through, but it seemed to be doing more harm than good. So somehow sane Simon convinced Virus Betty to leave him as he is for now.
The real Betty is still out there, plotting in her madness and sadness, desperate for any improbable idea to bring back Simon. But if she cures his madness, how will the then cure her own?
