The reason I bring up the "trying not to offend trans people" thing is because that's WHY people tend to think their personalities revolve around their identities. If I'm talking to a gay friend, we can talk about whatever the hell we want for hours and his sexual orientation won't even come up. I'll read posts made by that gay friend, and they'll cover all manner of things. Online, you often won't even know a person is gay unless they specifically tell you.
If you talk to a transgender person, on the other hand, five minutes cannot go by without them correcting you on something. They constantly whine about their lives and how much they hate their bodies, they post essay-long Facebook posts echoing empty words of encouragement (or just talking about how much they want to kill themselves), and they use their victim status as a cudgel against anyone unfortunate enough to feel sorry for them. The way they treat their non-trans allies is especially appalling... I can't imagine what a burden it must be to be friends with one of these guys.
But anyhow, that's why people think their personalities revolve around their identities. It's because they usually do.
I apologize if I've gone off on a tangent again. And maybe there are sane, well-adjusted, unentitled trans people outside of college campuses. But I sure as hell haven't met any
