The story was a last-minute rewrite, as the original plan for Carol's surprise pregnancy would have involved the Supreme Intelligence, but a recent issue of What If? had done something too similar. This is why four writers are credited. They probably didn't intend Carol/Marcus to be viewed as a rape, it was more likely a mistake or badly worded dialogue, but that's how people read it.>>117580060
Avengers Annual #10 was a sequel to #200, as damage control to deal with the controversy, and they handed it to Claremont, who wrote most of Carol's solo book, and gets too attached to characters he wrote.
Instead of making it clear it wasn't rape, he validated the complaints, and put the blame on the entire Avengers team, not just Thor, Tony and Hawkeye, the only ones present to hear Marcus' story.
Shooter wanted Carol written out and put into limbo, the original solution was that she falls in love with Marcus, and retires to literal Limbo to be with him. Claremont's solution was for Carol to become Binary, the heroine so powerful nobody would ever use her, and send her out into deep space, where she remained for 15 years.
