I was very impressed. The animation was really refreshing, the character designs are fun, and the premise is something that I don't think we've seen in a long while that's also fun. One nice thing that I really liked was the use of the in-show instagram thing. A lot of room for fun things here if those jews at cartoon network keep a distance of at least ten feet and don't screw this up.

God, there is such a WIDE gulf in quality between the voices. Flug sounds like the actor knows what he's doing and Black Hat sounds really good. But then Sunblast, Penumbra and ESPECIALLY Demencia sound like they just grabbed some interns and put them in the ADR booth.

His evilness only adds to the overall humor. The shorts clearly paint, while Black Hat has a massive ego and might be a bit full of himself, he's still every bit the competent monster he paints himself as.

Same with his lackies, Flugg might be a bumbling science dork, but he's still a mad scientist who will perform unspeakable acts on you for an experiment. And Demencia might be a lovestruck yandere who's a few watts short of a lightbulb, but she's still a dangerous inhuman psychopath who would gladly rip off your scalp and wear it.

All this is part of the show's charm.

Is that true? I thought the English VA was doing an uncannily good impression of the Spanish VA. Though it would explain why English Black Hat sounds like he's speaking his lines slowly and phonetically, but it works for his character.

When the dub actors are hand-picked and the revised script approved, like with Cowboy Bebop or Fullmetal Alchemist, you get similarly high-quality stuff.

that's why alot of people in the earlier thread where talking about bad voice direction, it's almost like the va's weren't quite sure what emotion they where trying to convey or just couldn't get into it because they had no visual aid or some shit. for whatever reason it genuinely feels like the eng va's on the pilot just can't get into character and give it enough oomph.

I was very excited for a villain-centric cartoon, especially one that isn't afraid to get dark, and the pilot was very promising after the shorts started putting me off with the "My OC is the best and most powerful villain ever created, and I'm going to have him make fun of far more entertaining, engaging, complex, and interesting villains for not being omniscient, omnipotent mass murderers" shit. Having Black Hat largely looming in the background and motivating his Team Rocket-style minions to do better is definitely a good application of him, since his creator insists he be perfect. He could definitely take center stage at crucial moments, though, and I look forward to a situation that will demand his intervention.

I want to like this show but after the 10 min pilot I saw I really dislike the direction Black Hat is going. From all the shorts he is semi bumbling villain along side of his henchmen and they play off each other. The 10 min episode he was just some super edgy entity on a pedestal with zero humorous character interaction. If that is the ongoing persona they push for him, especially since he might not even show up all that often as the trio are main focus, I might not watch.

I think the show will mostly focused on his henchmen rather than Black Hat himself. Black Hat is this force of evil that have little to no flaw and is largely only concerned with doing evil so he's bound to be uninteresting without having exciting situations for him to play out of. That's why the pilot was mostly about Flug learning the importantance of teamwork, because him and the other henchmen aren't eldritch entities. Least that's how I see it.

Some people with the condition supposedly have moved though that could just be a lie. Most don't want to move for a large variety of valid reasons. Ideally Penumbra just wants to cure it and only wanted to make a section of the city on perpetual night mode. Sure still bad for the people unaffected by the condition there but not super evil

I'll be okay if it's for the early episodes, and they work gradually to more evil villains. Flug may be a dork, but he's sadistic at heart and does his job, while Demencia, though a woman-child and having a permanent boner for Black Hat, is still a great fighter who was able to singly beat Sunblast before FLug interrupted.

BH should be part of the team and should still, for the most part enjoy his comrads or at lest Flug a bit. Him being this shadowy dark figure that everyone fears and is "the boss" no one wants to talk to I feel really takes away from his character. I like that they are actually compitant and aren't just getting away on pure dumb luck alone but the piolt takes all of that away.

I agree with your points that the writing is basic. Hell, Black Hat felt more human in the shorts because he also gets caught up in the team's stupidity.

Hopefully if it gets greenlit, they can give Black Hat more characterization rather than being the untouchable bastard in this pilot. The short felt like Excel Saga with Black being Ilpallazo, Excel being Dementia with Flug as Hyatt. 505 is Menchi except its not the food supply. (Yet)

I find this fascinating.
It's all just pixels and waifu+circle tool belly, but the storytelling from the artist/uploader/thread context completely changes your willing suspension of disbelief about what you're looking at.
