Well, TECHNICALLY, the show gets it wrong with the idea that Catholic priests and bishops have to be personally holy in order for their blessings and sacraments to work. It's actually the other way around: it's the Sacraments and blessings that are holy in and of themselves, and they'll continue to be holy regardless of how sinful and wicked the individual priest or bishop is.

If you want to learn more, look up the Donatist controversy. It's kind of fascinating.

I think the funny thing is that the holy water endsvup wiping out both Dracula's and Carmilla's army, and 90 percent of the vampire nobles wind up dead before the next day, with minimal human casualties.

A net gain for the good guys, really.

The fight scenes are nice, I just wish that Dracula was more active instead of sulking for a hundred episodes and fighting at 10% power for the final episode. I guess he's so goddamn powerful that they have to cripple him so anyone stands a chance.

I also really REALLY hate how 1-dimensional all the bad guys are, and how easily Carmilla takes over everything, without hiding a damn thing.

It feels so half-assed whenever there's bad guy scenes.

I was bothered too with the Alucard 1v1 but it kinda made sense. When Dracula throws the first fireball, I could see the You are Dead screen.
They should really go with the "quest" route, the political content is very boring. To me, all of that was just another one of Dracula's whims. The dude is powerful enough to wipe out mankind with his bare hands.

It most definitely is anti-religion in that it shows organized religion to be inherently flawed regardless of the source behind its teachings, which is a separate issue involving misinformation and ignorance regarding the historic role if the church and the way medical sciences were approached at the time. The changes made to the role of the church in the story were unnecessary and uninformed, for reasons both relating to the narrative and the nature of powerful organizations regardless of origin or creed. I'm honestly kind of tired of most people on both sides of this argument saying the most ludicrous and tangential points of what the real discussion here should be, which involves the intent of the author and the purpose in the narrative that this change was intended to serve, but no one seems to care. I want to believe that people here are just baiting for emotional responses, because this board lately has been completely devoid of genuine, intellectually honest and open minded discussions for months and in fact has only been getting worse with every other poster taking an emotionally invested, dismissive and shockingly tribal attitude that leads to nothing but shit flinging.

seriously, it's another war on Christmas made up controversy to drum up views.

The prevailing theme in the show is quite clearly that fanaticism is the problem, weather it be for religion or love or revolution or hate.

Carmilla was completely justified in her desire to overthrow Dracula (her assessment that he was going to get everyone killed by wiping out mankind was on the nose) and likely the vampire who sired her, but she had a fanatical obsession with power as her motivator.

The Church worships a God that exists in-universe and has the power to smite vampires, but their devotion is fanatical and selfishly motivated, so they're in the wrong. On the other hand, the small-time priest in the village in season 1 who didn't work with the Bishop survives and helps save the day.

The show's critique of Christianity is actually pretty good, in any case the problem is that the same points are always being raised and the extremely edgy presentation. All the points raised in the show could be held up to Islam or the jews and it'd be equally as valid, but the show has to lower the bar to attack the modern escape goat.
That being said, the second season succeeded in being a show instead of yet another stab at the church with a castlevania skin.

The line about needing an actual ordained priest suggests the bishop was putting collars on thugs to secure his base of power.

That was pretty easily seen. That said, the belmonts being excommunicated and their hatred of the church was something fabricated to market edgy teens and reflects nothing of the story.

Its being marketed to hat tippers, and if you bite on that as a positive then you may also want to get fitted for your own trilby to call a fedora.

I'm all for the cruelty and hypocrisy of the church's inquisitions being a major theme of the story, but it does feel a little hamfisted when every single priest that gets any real screen-time is either one-dimensionally insane or pure evil.

Just show a few religious characters genuinely trying to work for the greater good of people outside of the rest of the church's corruption and it balances out.

Because it cannot be observed, only practiced and catalogued, shit is an art not a science. This is where chemistry turns to alchemy and everything else is magic. Dracula knew how to use technology but a lot of his shit was not part of the physical realm.
