Is this the designated SU whining thread?
Man, the magic really just left this show. Literally. It was about the time they stopped referring to magic n shit and it all became technology and apparently just inherent alien powers; the mystery of the world just fucking went up in smoke
I REALLY liked the sense of unknowns in the first season. Wondering who the gems were, why there were only three (four) in the world and why their civilization seemed to be in ruins
There was a sense of culture to them that we along with Steven were left to wonder about. Then Lapis shatters fucking everything and you get an inkling that the gems might have more to them than just an isolated remnant cut off from their species. And Peridot reveals that they weren't just separated from their kind by the happenstance of broken warps, they purposefully sabotaged the link to their homeworld and the sight of a cold, ALIEN gem like Peridot nearly restoring that link TERRIFIES the gems and you realize that they were up to some real shit
I know I'm talking up Crying and Singing, the show, but I swear those early times were honestly good at setting up a real mystery and sinister menace to the beings who lived out there among the stars
Then the bubble broke and we got a full view of the universe that had been hinted at. And we got laughably incompetent diamonds, actually too dumb to function grunts, and enemy befriending on a level to shame horse show
The mystery's gone, the magic is gone, the menace is gone. It's a functional progression I guess but it's come with far more letdowns than awe, and I just don't think the show, what with its huge roster, long running plots, and myriad twists, actually stands up to the show when it was about a fat kid trying to catch a monster of the week
