I started being sympathetic to him back in the earlier volumes where the other characters treated him like shit all the time. I think the major early things I remember were that chapter about everyone using his scarf as a tissue and that time Lily said that they had to find Mike for Lucy's sake when he fall in Acapulco. The thing about everyone falling for him literally never works out in his favor and early on mostly applied to hordes of background characters for quick gags. He tries to be nice to Daisy after Abbey throws an autism fit, and she takes advantage of that to try to seduce him. Then he ends up feeling like the asshole for getting angry at her. There's also the whole Lucy situation where she refused to open up to him about her feelings until long after she had repeatedly insisted that Sandy was his girlfriend, compounded by his friends' reaction to his rejection and what

TL;DR I feel like Mike gets shafted a lot and is generally right when he's upset about things.
