Everything else besides the game itself is not shit about League currently. Jesus christ I can't imagine Valve putting that much effort and money just to sell some skins in a dying game. Seriously, I wish they give balancing MORE attention now. Turret checkpoints are only just gonna make snowballing lanes even more unstoppable, and the Aatrox rework is LITERALLY Riven 2.0

The original lore is that the players are "Summoners", really powerful magicians who are deciding over political decisions via League matches. All the heroes you play are "champions" that go through a vetting process that allows them to be summoned. I think this might've been retconned though.

It was retconned, summoners no longer exist or at least have no in-lore definitions, probably because it was conflicting with lore for some of the champions. They also retconned lore for most of the champions, for some multiple times, and some characters probably still have old lore.

It's a shitshow and they won't be able to make anything long-running with it, it's going to be another expensive one-off promo with no story because Riot can't hold lore together for a few months.

One of things that's been bothering me about the game since I've sorta noticed during the rune update which is that the game isn't really skill based. A lot of champs are designed to play like you're skilled but most of the work is from high damage ratios and the ability to erase big mistakes on the fly with zero consequences.

basically, during a thing called the "mage wars" a ton of wizards realized that casting spells causes the fabric of reality to fuck over the world, leading to what could be a Magical Apocolypse ( The character who discovered this was Ryze. )

So the League was created to fight Proxy skirmishes in magically sealed off locations to gain political rights and territory.

Would make sense. My bet would be some kind of Diabolo thing. Look at the mini games like Odyssey or Star Guardian, it seems they are either testing grounds. Dont know if next game or just how far they can make new mechanics.

Long story sort of short-
Yorick could see and talk to spirits as a kid. This attracted some monks. They took him in. Their symbol/weapon of choice was a spade/shovel as they commonly performed burial rites. They also carry a thing of glorified holy water around their necks.

One day his new home is attacked by The Black Mist. It overtook him, but he wasn't killed. The holy water keeps it at bay, keeping him from dying (but apparently he's also undead now I guess). He wakes up eventually and tries to figure out what the fuck happened- no survivors are found on his island. All he could figure is some kind of "Ruined King" was trying to resurrect his queen and it wrecked everyone's shit.

He tried talking to the dead again like he did as a kid since he was so alone. Suddenly he's a fucking necromancer and he can command the dead now. So, he uses the dead's power to try and figure out what happened, as well as eventually bring those same dead peace.

So, still a gravedigger of sorts, and still a sort of undead, but no longer a "bound by a familial oath of eternal service" sort of undead undertaker necromancer.

Li'l bit, yeah. That's kind of the problem with a lot of the new characters' lores. Few updates/retcons have been improvements, but just more or less "we might need to be able to write this character into others' stories so leave them open ended."

But some characters are preserved at least. Veigar's new lore is actually pretty solid and stays true to the original's themes of isolation and going stir-crazy and whatnot. Udyr's was pretty good, though the original write up forgot to include his badassery during the Noxian occupation of Ionia, but after enough bitching that was reinstated in the lore too.

But some rewrites have been fucking abominable. Poor Varus turned into two literally-whos who fell in a well. Lee Sin is no longer a pompous summoner turned humble who burned himself alive for days like a boss, but just another kid with a stupid destiny who shows up at a monastery because he was chosen by "the dragon." And Galio, oh God. Instead of being an animated statuesque guardian who lost his creator/father figure and stood in silent vigil over his corpse, only being given the will to go on living by seeing a struggling yordle press on despite her burden, he's just a pompous giant statue that wakes up when too much magic occurs near him.

And don't even get me started on Skarner, or the Crystal Scar in general. Jesus...

I always felt as though there was way more under the surface for Aatrox and he had some sort of goal in mind acting behind the scenes for thousands of years. In his lore he would always appear during wars and lead people to victory against terrible odds. I thought the idea was he made people into great warriors or champions for some sort of ulterior motive that had yet to be revealed. Considering he fought against the Watchers and then later creates some "too angry to die" barbarian king to aid in uniting the land I assumed he was secretly a "good" guy with amoral methods.

All of his lines weren't inherently violent either. They were mostly trying to encourage people to continue fighting and struggle against high odds.

He feels more generic to me now than he did then. Too bad he was popular with edgelords

Tryndamere used to be my favorite Champion, his lore was basically just Conan and I liked how he fought his way to the top.

Now he's just a hanger-on to Ashe's story.

They even made him less important to Aatrox. Aatrox used to see Tryndamere has his "Greatest work" Now he's just "Another host to burn out"

Yorick's always been a weird one for me. He's probably my favourite champion in the game and I was super stoaked for his rework. It finally came out and I enjoyed it...but I quit the game at that exact point too. It wasn't even from burnout or anything like that, they fucked around his lore so much I guess it just made me leave. A silly reason but I guess that's what happens when you get invested into characters like that. Still, out of all the champs I had to get invested in him.

Somewhat off topic but it really grinds me gears how much developers seem to think/feel that they're beholden to Reddit and/or NeoGAF (I suppose RE these days). No there have been countless reboots because none of the reboots happened at the same time.

Shurima, Targon, Frejlord, demacia/noxus, irelia's place that I forget the name of etc. all got rebooted years apart but these are major regions of the continent that inform on each other so when they change them it's basically rebooting the continent again.

What you mean is a retcon. They changed thing when they told a new story or something that contradict itself.
The only reboot is the universe project. Because now they write down and collect stuff that makes it official.

The most painful one for me was Karthus. Ruler of the Howling Marsh, the only true volunteer in the League, personally got between Kassadin and Malzahar fighting at one point.
Changed to be a super edgelord who edgelorded harder than anyone had before.

I thought Renekton NASUS'd his way into the league even without a summoner. I could be wrong though.

That seems to be the level of their writing ability as of the past couple years. To think that I used to make fun of all their weird design choices before s1, now I wish they kept them.
