My whole point is that by virtue of his power level it would be possible for him to prevent most if not all preventable deaths that occur all over the world in a day. With his speed, x-ray vision, super hearing and nigh invulnerability his reach is so great that he could easily patrol the whole globe and drastically improve his rate of saving people. It's not like some street level schmuck going on patrol and maybe encountering one or two muggings on a good night.
Why is it so hard to accept the fact that every time Superman takes a 20 minute nap or hovers around a building moping about his tough life, there are bound to be people dying. There are 117 fatal traffic accidents in the USA alone. Bats understands that with great power comes great responsibility. Superman does not, he's rather let people die to get some alone time with his thoughts.
If somebody goes overboard and you could throw them a life ring, do you think it would be okay to say nope, I have to think about the meaning of my life right now? or you'd say nah, I was just gonna go to my cabin to cuddle with my wife? It's easy for you to pick up the life ring and just throw it, just as it physically easy for Supes to save a shit ton of lives each day if he really applied himself.
Ultimately it's just applying to much logic to capeshit, I suppose. Though defending his actions with rationalizations is pretty weak. The thing is that he's just too overpowered to write him in a logical sound way.
