Comic sales barely influence the bottom line of Netflix, Disney, and other TV execs, etc. It's not as if all the people watching the shows and movies were purchasing the comics anyway.

Even if comics die out, the characters will remain and they'll continue to churn out media related to it so long as the characters sell and parents can be made to by their kids superhero merch and toys.

Also, making hundreds of single strip solo comics instead of making more anthology comics (which are pretty much the standard outside the US) seems outdated, but I suspect Perlmutter would balk at the notion of comics offering value for mobey and variety.

I work the register in the LCS in my town, and the owner tells me to ask every customer that buys manga "why they aren't buying western comics instead". Literally over half of them give the same answer: "NO POLITICS".

I work at an LCS. The dude I work for insists on buying an absurd amount of books because he thinks that their hot and under buys the books that people actually want.

That Marvel Legacy book in OP's picture unironically triggered me because he ordered so fucking many of them that we're stuck with them. Fuck even the Fantastic Four is barely moving the needle at my LCS* and this was the book that people kept hyping up.

*Of course other stores may have had better luck with that book but fuck I thought that we were going to sell out of it fairly quickly.

I'm a die-hard comics fan with two shelves full of books, but haven't touched a floppy in years. It's a horrid fucking format with some of the worst price-per-entertainment value possible, especially in an era when everything is decompressed to fuck so a floppy isn't even a single story, it's part X of 6.

I'll keep buying trades and hardcovers and shit, there're a bunch of upcoming comics I'm super excited for (BPRD HoE omnibus editions, Colossal Conan the Cimmerian/King Conan, Devilman Omnibus, etc.,)

Piracy is so rampant in manga because either a series doesn't come out in the west or the series gets an awful official translation. Both led to the hyperactive scan community that does the translating on most pirated stuff online. Viz is getting content out fast, however, thanks to being a subsidiary of Jump's owners. If Japan makes a manga version of Steam, safe to say that the piracy problem will go away quickly.

We have pretty good sales for a LCS. Not like Midtown or something but pretty good. Floppies are..hit or miss. The owner will buy a shit load of floppies for books that he thinks will sell well but end up in our back issues collecting dust and taking up space. Graphic Novels sell pretty well too which is funny because I feel like some of the current stories are bad for the GN format.

Immortal Hulk was a book that he only ordered, I want to say 10?, copies of the first issue because Hulk isn't really a sell out book for us. Turns out that book is probably the one of the best selling current Marvel book at our store and we keep having people add it to their pull boxes.

Anthologies don't sell though. I think the bigger problem is the decompression. There is no incentive to pick up a book when you know it's mired in some hack's 40 issue run and that a bigger hack will just tear it all down in a few more issues. The slump comes from the end of buying spree of old collections and trades caused by the movies, of which there was always a limited potential market. the new numbers are the ones we get from new trades and ongoings.

Big two floppies have settled on indie numbers (10k: good) for non household titles and LCS have been restructured into collector shops with the ability to sell what's essentially teaser releases that are bought hardcore fans while everyone else waits for the trade.

Things are stabilizing. neither good or bad. just doing ok. This has been happening since the comics crash.

Ethan Van Scyver is also self publishing. Fred Perry at Antarctic Press has been writing Gold Digger for years. Competition is only an issue if all you care about is sticking to the Big 2. You do you and just work with your niche audience and if it kicks off into mainstreams like some of other indie books that got big, then all the power to you. Indie is like PC gaming; it doesn’t get the same mainstream attention as the consoles but it’s in its own league and does it’s own thing (even has the elitist fanbase).

As much as I respect the man, I don't think he would have been able to put post-crash marvel back on the map like Quesada did. In a way, they both did the same thing, but with the appropriate sensibilities for their respective periods - Quesada just had the vision to make marvel innovative in the 2000s, something jim shooter's meticulous perfectionism didn't (even if he did expand the fuck out of marvel's scope too).

Then again, in an alternative timeline, Jim would have won the bid for marvel, put someone like quesada as his EiC, and marvel could have it's cake and eat it.

All the relaunches, events, and crossovers work great short term and can get floppies up real quick, but it complicates things in the long term.

Even Didio said that Rebirth wasn't as successful as New 52, though I think he was mostly talking about the trades not being as successful. New 52 was the first time in a long time DC has done something like that and it worked for 4 years until DCYou when a bunch of C listers flopped. Rebirth worked for a few months and then it was back to normal.

They are being held up by TWD, similarly to how DC is held up by Batman.
However one of Image's main problems is the hiatuses, which not only let them lose money from lost floppies (<5 floppies/year vs 9-10 floppies/year), but make it so a big selling book may only get one trade in a year instead of two. Now some years may make it so you only have one trade anyway since the second arc may not end until the end of the year, but it's the symptom of a larger problem.
This is further exacerbated by how Image vol 1s are $10. Great to get people to pick it up, which you can tell by how image often fills the top 20 comichron list. But then nobody picks up a vol 2, 3, etc, because it either doesn't come out or it's been over a year since the first one came out.

Aftershock, should they ever get big sales, will probably be like this as well.

Animosity was one of their more popular books and yet if you look like the comic delay thread, there's an Animosity book on there like every other week. And if you look at the release schedule on comic vine, months are skipped constantly. It's ridiculous.

Image tried fixing it by making it so a creative team needs to have 3 issues completed before they'll publish it, but that doesn't help the whole "get one arc out and then never finish the second" thing.

I read the first 12 or so issues of Action Comics (1938). Superman does a lot of social activism and stuff that approaches political action, sometimes. The execution is much more idiotic than the politics in modern comics. The only thing that stops it from being insufferable is the distance of time and the message being too ridiculous to take seriously.

Fun fact: digital comics cost exactly the same as physical despite lacking distribution and printing costs because they're forced to avoid competition with floppies. Realistically they should cost half price if not lower, and if they did, they would be worth getting.
As it stands, I could buy a full hour album on Bandcamp for the price of a floppy, and I would get to keep it and download it whenever I wanted. Meanwhile a floppy is barely 20 pages of content with ADS in a flimsy material, that lasts me about 5-10 minutes to read.

I've read a lot of manga, and most of those few with any noticeable politics tend to simply reflect current japanese society rather than commenting/taking sides on it.

It's more than just a question of "are comics selling".

An LCS with Diamond pays somewhere around 30-50% the cost of an issue. Sell half your order and you've paid for that weeks books. The question is if this is enough to keep the lights on which in most cases it isn't because no community outside a major city has the number of readers for that kinda profit.

Which is why the LCS that stay in business don't just sell comics but also TCG's Table top, RPGS, and other nerd hobbies. Most shops closing never had the market to begin with, were completing against already well established stores, or didn't bother to diversify their merchandise.

It's not comics or the industry failing these stores, it's there own shitty business practices.

It was monthly, and was having to compete with scanlators who were YEARS ahead on everything they were publishing. For every 1 chapter US SJ published, scanlators were putting out 2-4.

It's only in the last few years that they've even gotten up to a 1 week delay on release for the digital versions vs japan.

They've never tried releasing a comic store version of this anthology in the states on a weekly schedule.

To be fair, manga and anime are also affected by trends and bubbles. Look at the over abundance of isekai manga, LN and anime right now, or the school clubs with cute girls that were a thing when Haruhi and Lucky Star came out or mecha in the 70’s and 80’s. Trends tend to come and go, but comics and manga always pull out and continue. I mean, the comics industry survived the 90’s. They’re not anywhere near the same position they were back then, even if comics sold more during that time.

Nah, the politics may be awful, but let's be blunt; the Big Two have not been in a good place for ages. I like some runs of superhero comics (ironically I prefer the Silver Age and Golden Age stuff to the 90s and onwards) but the mix of unattractive (if often competently done) artwork and insipid writing makes me really not want to pick them up.

Another big boom of American comics that I enjoyed was the 80s indie/small publisher scene when you got a lot more creativity going on.
