Manga is cheaper to get into, and generally easier at that.

For $13 you can pick up a copy of Dragon Ball 3-in-1, which has the print quality of half-ply toilet paper but has over 500 pages worth of story to tell. It's all in numerical order from start to finish and doesn't require reading supplemental works or crossover events to fully enjoy the series.

Compare that to what you could buy on the American comic market for $15. A trade maybe? Marvel Essential or a DC Showcase if you're really looking to stretch your dollar? You're still facing the issue of having to figure out what order to read everything in and for some essential plots you've got to pick up the latest Crisis going on.

I'm not saying manga is better as far as storytelling / art goes, but those gooks are painfully efficient at producing volume after volume at a steady rate. Viz did the right thing waiting for as long as they did for their market to come pouring in.

That said, OP is a faggot and we didn't need another thread about this.

Okay, no. That is not even remotely why.

The reasons why are long and complicated, need a massive history lesson but basically, comics due to outside forces and business, slowly became more and more of a niche product and the industry proceeded to completely shit the bed in terms of turning the tide back. The Diamond Distribution, the fact that floppies can only purchased practically in digital because comic book stores are incredibly niche, the actually difficult to surmount barrier of how much history every character has. This often repeated way too much but my man,Hajimno Ippo may just have over 1200 chapters but I just got to start with chapter one. In contrast if it's Big 2 I got to look at the name on a particular number of comics and figure out what trades have only those.

Also comics have a problem with the talent pool available to them. I don't mean that in all comic book writers are shit. I mean that in a lot of the Big 2 writing is shit because you're looking for a cross section of people who are willing and able to write comic series about a character they don't own, sometimes in short bursts that still on average are more than a year or two of their lives, with random editorial mandates and events.

How many series was Bendis writing before he jumped ship? This is a guy who went from writing good crime comics to mediocre superhero tales that were genuinely godawful and it wasn't just because he was inserting his politics. The dude was forgetting shit as he went along, across titles and had absolutely no idea what the voice of a particular character sounded like. Phoning it in? Maybe not but holy shit he was stumbling.

In contrast I could get drunk and while a lot of it is going to be shit, just the massive talent pool means that I'm going to find a good self published book on amazon or a good web novel.

Started with X-Men volume 9, Captain America volume 3, and Fantastic Four volume 2. Everything you need to know about the story is explained in each issue, so it doesn't matter where you start.
Yesterday I got two DC Showcases for $3 each at Ollie's, a wholesale place for those not familiar, and every story in both of them is stand alone.

Sure, I guess when Marvel was doing their $1 sale that LCS were complaining about (Basically any new TPB release at the time was going for $1)

DC on average never goes below $5, and Marvel maxes at $3.

Sure, but many modern books still read well from the start of any given run. I say that very few good books require any prior reading to enjoy, even if they are enhanced by that knowledge. My first DC book was 52 and I was far from lost despite not knowing most of the characters and having no idea how they got to where they were. You're right that the biggest issue is people thinking they need to start at a particular point, though I have no idea how to fix that.

We only get physical sales data because Diamond reports them. And those aren't actual sales, just what all the stores have pre-ordered on expectations, which is why there's always a big drops when the stores start adjusting the orders after a new creative team or relaunch.

For 15 bucks you can get two or three trades when they do trade sales. And you do get DC and Marvel comics for one dollar a pop during sales, they aren't just the latest issues, there's a lag where they drop the price down after a certain period of time which then allows them to be cheap when there's a themed sale. I only buy shit through sales, never anything new.

And with digital you've got decades worth of material to choose from so you aren't even required to only get new stuff if you don't want to.

The problem is all in the distribution. No one wants to buy floppies and no one wants to go to a comic book store, if they even know where one is to visit. I don't think the value of these manga volumes is much better than most trades and the quality most certainly isn't any better. It's all about getting your product into the hands of an audience and comics do a shit job of that.

This is mainly an issue because comics are more expensive to make, where you have a team of individuals releasing a single issue.

For a single typical issue of a comic book you'll have a Wrtier, a penciller, an inker/colorist, and then any number of extra credits from letterer's to "story" guys ontop of the usual writer. Meanwhile for a Manga you have 1...Maybe 2 guys working on it?

So ontop of the cost of hiring staff to work on series or the risk of starting a new one-off or entire series, you have to pay for the ink that goes into printing the whole thing as well.

There isn't some unjustified reason for the steeper cost of a comic. Just by quickly comparing the two you can easily see the difference in quality that you're getting from your typical manga compared to your typical comic.

A good chunk of the male shonen protagonists fall either under blander than corn flakes or smart-ass-who-thinks-he's-hot-shit.
The seinen demographic is sorta losing its bites a bit.
Female shonen and seinen characters are meek, bland, wheat thins or mood-swinging thundercunts
Dunno about shoujo or josei categories though.

Otaku Killer did a put a significant dent in manga and anime which is why most shonen manga are toned down.

The value is what you place on it as a reader. Personally, I would never waste my money on a 300+ page omnibus unless I was actually interested in reading what it was, and even then I would easily settle for a 120 page book if the art was better and had a more interesting story.

Personal observation-wise I go to my local Barns & Noble every month.
Every store that specialized in comicbooks closed down with the nearest now being 3 cities away in a college-town riddled with hipsters.
I buy manga, but I look at the comics because I feel like being reminded why I buy manga.
Every year more and more of that section is being eaten by the neighboring manga section.
I remember when there was only 2 bookshelves of them.
Now there are 12 bookshelves of manga while comics only have 4 bookshelves with half a bookshelf of rags in the magazine section where advertisement riddled shit like that belongs.

Supeheroes became the dominant force because kids loved them and moral guardians had no complaints.

BTW I'm not him but the primary issue to me is that manga have 1 author. 1 writer. People like Oda or Miura are continuing the story they wrote in their heads 30 years ago. Comic books have several authors. A status quo needs to be preserved or the writers start in-fighting and undoing each others' progress. The Sonic comic was infamous for this. The best comic books are stories that are so short that only one guy had to write it, or events where several authors got together and agreed on one storyline; one vision.

That's why editors exist. Writer's aren't allowed to just do whatever they want, and Alan Moore had to ask in order to cripple Batgirl in Killing Joke (which had long-lasting effects for the character who turned into Oracle).

Yes it certainly is. Frank Miller's Ronin was 6 issues, a limited series. If you can get two to three times that from a single arc, which is pretty common, then that's more than enough, and there's hundreds of arc's for the characters that DC has, canon and non-canon.

Eh they're often bad but too few and far between to actually be a cause. They might push away a few comic buyers but it doesn't kill the interest of new buyers cause the main issue is marketability.
And not marketability of characters, but of a medium. "Hey want to spend $3-5 on a glossy magazine full of a short story that you'll finish as fast as a big Mac? What's that it's easier to pirate it or wait for it to be a trade and get it on Amazon or a regular bookstore instead of going to a niche shop designed for ditrubiting this medium that most stores don't want to bother with?"
We need to go back to newsprint. Lower the price of the cost to read these or stock these to below $2 again.

Yeah and even if you don't look at money costs one of the major complaints that people who grew up on manga have about comic books is that even though they're in full color, every issue is extremely short by comparison and, even worse, modern comic book stories get extremely dragged out and intertwined between series and limiteds and runs and spinoffs and events; it just alienates new readers when they find out that they can't just go from Comic Book #1 to Comic Book #N but need the assistance of a reading order guide in order to have everything sorted out for them if they really want to follow their favorite characters. With manga you go from volume 1 chapter 1 and then move forward, and you literally don't miss a single thing doing so.

The main problems with the comic:
1. Too many op characters, as result the action is simply boring. The reader simply does not understand who loses and does not feel that the hero is in real danger.
2. Design. Diving suit, diving suit and diving suit with a cloak. Take it off immediately.
3. Again boring action. Punch, punch and punch again. All battles go through one scenario and there is no variety in weapons, tactics or styles. And Great 2 is too concentrated on melee combat. Give a guns more respect, god damn.
So the comic book just needs to be more diverse in styles and reduce strength of heroes. In the end, in the Golden Age Superman was not so invulnerable and even ordinary people give him a hard time without any kryptonite.
