Pink Diamond saw humans and understood there was a connection. Humans and Gems can fuse. White Diamond knows more than anyone else, White Diamond knows how to corrupt Gems.

I am going to guess in another time line, Humans used Gems. At some point Gems became corrupted. A human can't time travel, but Gems can. A human(s) fused with a Gem and time traveled to escape the corruption. Or tried to.
I am going to guess Steven travels to the original time line, and sees what Gems are. But he doesn't want to stay, and thus he does something to get back to his time line.
